บทสรรเสริญอัคนีสั้น ๆ นี้ทำหน้าที่เป็นมนตร์คุ้มครองและชำระล้าง: ประกาศว่าอัคนีไม่อาจถูกทำร้ายด้วยอันตรายอันโหดร้าย และใช้อำนาจความร้อนอันแหลมคม (เตชนะ) ของท่านขับไล่ความทุกข์ภัยที่เป็นมลทิน กัดกร่อน หรือคล้ายเส้นด้าย เมื่อผสานพลังชำระของไฟเข้ากับพลังบดขยี้ของสายน้ำ และความสามารถชี้นำของวาจา (วาจ) บทสวดนี้จึงชี้นำอำนาจร้ายให้ไปสู่ “ทางออก” (นิษฺกฤติ) และฟื้นคืนพลังชีวิตที่เป็นระเบียบภายใต้ความมั่นคงของสุริยะ

अग्निस्तवः। न॒हि ते॑ अग्ने त॒न्वः क्रू॒रमा॒नंश॒ मर्त्यः॑ । क॒पिर्ब॑भस्ति॒ तेज॑नं॒ स्वं ज॒रायु॒ गौरि॑व
(สรรเสริญอัคนี) โอ อัคนี ไม่มีมนุษย์ผู้ใดจะเข้าถึงและทำอันตรายอันโหดร้ายต่อกายของท่านได้. ผู้มีสีแดงน้ำตาลนั้นวาบประกายรัศมีอันคมกล้าของตน ดุจโคเพศเมียสลัดรกออกไป.

मे॒ष इ॑व॒ वै सं च॒ वि चो॒र्व॒ऽच्यसे॒ यदु॑त्तर॒द्रावुप॑रश्च॒ खाद॑तः । शी॒र्ष्णा शिरोऽप्स॒साप्सो॑ अ॒र्दय॑न्नं॒शून् ब॑भस्ति॒ हरि॑तेभिरा॒सभिः॑
ดุจแกะผู้ตัวผู้ แท้จริงท่านถูกกระแทกให้ปะทะกันและถูกผลักให้แยกออก เมื่อท่านหนีขึ้นสูงแล้วกัดแทะจากเบื้องบน. ด้วยศีรษะเขากระแทกศีรษะ; ด้วยน้ำ—โอ้เหล่าน้ำทั้งหลาย—เมื่อบดขยี้ท่าน เขาย่ำยีเส้นใยของท่านด้วยขากรรไกรสีเหลืองอมน้ำตาลของเขา

The fair-winged made speech; upon the heavenly hollow the black, the swift, bestirred themselves in dance. When they lead down the upper one’s outlet, much seed they have deposited, resting upon the Sun.
