Sukta 8.60
शोचा शोचिष्ठ दीदिहि विशे मयो रास्व स्तोत्रे महाँ असि । देवानां शर्मन्मम सन्तु सूरयः शत्रूषाहः स्वग्नयः ॥
śócā śóciṣṭha dīdihí viśé máyo rásva stótre mahā́ṃ asi | devā́nāṃ śárman máma santu sūráyaḥ śatrū-sā́haḥ sv-agnáyaḥ ||
Recitation for kindling and strengthening Agni before/within praise (stotra); also protective prayer for the sacrificer’s community and its ‘sūrayaḥ’ (champions).
mayaḥ (divine delight), śarman (divine shelter/peace), inner force against opposition
‘Devānāṃ śarman’ indicates living within the divine order and protection.
Light (śociṣṭha) supports truthful perception; heroes act from that clarity.
Delight (mayaḥ) as a creative substance of mantra—speech becomes a carrier of Ananda.
Aurobindonian: tapas (fire) culminating in ananda (mayaḥ) and victorious transformation.
night-to-dawn transition (implied by ‘shine’ for the people)
Shining fire = awakened consciousness; shelter = stable higher poise; heroes = inner faculties disciplined by the flame.
Kindle a bright, benevolent inner heat; then invite delight to permeate mantra, speech, and action.
Maṇipūra → Anāhata (fire rising into joy and wideness)
Kapalabhati-lite (very gentle, 30–60 strokes) followed by quiet breathing while chanting once slowly.
Dynamic peace: energized yet protected.
Chant, then feel a warm light at the navel; let it rise to the heart as sweetness (mayaḥ). Affirm: ‘My forces are svagnayaḥ—guided by good fire.’
Accents per Saṃhitā; imperatives (śocā, dīdihi, rāsva) benefit from clear udatta lift and decisive cadence.
Mark pāda breaks carefully; keep ‘devānāṃ śarman’ as a single devotional unit with smooth sandhi.
Distinguish ś (palatal) in śocā/śociṣṭha from s in santu., Pronounce ‘ṣṭh’ cluster in śociṣṭha with retroflex ṣ + aspirated ṭh., Keep long ā in mahān, short a in mama.
Flame-like: bright, forward, but not harsh; end each pāda with grounded steadiness.
