Inside Sukta 60

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

Begins by praising Indra’s Vṛtra-breaking and the joint might of Indra with Agni, establishing them as the properly served powers who generate vāja.

  2. Development

Moves into repeated invitations: the pair are asked to come with their many-desired yoked movements/teams, to favor the generous sacrificer, and to increase strength and prosperity.

  3. Climax

The direct sacrificial summons intensifies—accept the offerings, arrive at the rite, and bestow victorious force; the union of might (Indra) and fire-power (Agni) is treated as immediately operative in the yajña.

  4. Where it settles

Concludes with a clear liturgical closure: hear the call of the Soma-presser, come after accepting the offerings, and drink the Soma-honey—securing blessing, clarity, and strength for the worshipper.

The deity: Indrāgnī

  • In the VedaA dual deity pairing the Vṛtra-slaying, obstacle-breaking might of Indra with Agni, the sacrificial fire and divine messenger who carries offerings and kindles luminous power. Together they are addressed as heroic, swift-coming, and worthy of service (saparyā), granting vāja, protection, and success to the dāśuṣ (the generous worshipper).
  • Cosmic functionThey jointly sustain ṛta through victory over obstruction and through the sacrificial exchange: Indra secures the cosmic opening (release of waters/forces), while Agni establishes the channel between humans and gods and energizes the rite.
  • Inner significanceIndra signifies decisive will, courage, and the breakthrough of inner resistance; Agni signifies aspiration, clarity, and the flame of discernment. As Indrāgnī they represent united power: force guided by light—energy that becomes effective, purified, and rightly directed.

The seer

Frequently Asked Questions

Indrāgnī is the paired deity Indra and Agni addressed together. Indra leads as the breaker of obstruction (Vṛtra-slayer), while Agni supports as the sacrificial fire that carries offerings and awakens luminous power.

The hymn seeks victory over obstacles, increase of strength (vāja), and prosperity for the worshipper. It asks Indra-and-Agni to come to the sacrifice, accept the offerings, and empower the sacrificer.

Because this sukta fits Soma-pressing worship: the gods are invited to drink the Soma (somya madhu). In Vedic symbolism, Soma is delight and clarity that becomes strength when received by the gods and returned as blessing to the devotee.
