Inside Sukta 90

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

Begins with the vision of Puruṣa as boundless—innumerable heads, eyes, and feet—encompassing and exceeding the earth.

  2. Development

Moves from Puruṣa’s cosmic vastness to the logic of manifestation: creation unfolds through a primordial all-offering sacrifice, from which beings, worlds, and sacred speech arise.

  3. Climax

The revelation that even the Vedic hymns, melodies, formulas, and meters are born from that sacrifice—yajña as the generative law of the cosmos.

  4. Where it settles

Concludes by affirming the first dharmas established through sacrificial order and the ascent of the divine powers to the highest realm where the ancient Sādhyas abide.

The deity: Puruṣa

  • In the VedaPuruṣa is portrayed as immeasurable—“thousand-headed, thousand-eyed, thousand-footed”—encompassing the earth and surpassing it, the totality from which beings and orders arise. He is both the offered and the ground of offering: the sacrifice becomes the generative pattern of manifestation.
  • Cosmic functionSource and container of the cosmos: from the primordial yajña arise the worlds, beings, and the forms of sacred speech (Ṛc, Sāman, Yajus and chandas), establishing dharma as cosmic order.
  • Inner significanceRepresents the integral Self/Consciousness in which all faculties and identities are harmonized; the ‘sacrifice of Puruṣa’ symbolizes surrender of limited ego into wholeness, yielding inner order and luminous understanding.

The seer

  • Nārāyaṇa (traditional); Anukramaṇī attributions varyBeing the later traditional seer-name associated with the Puruṣa Sūkta, a foundational hymn for Vedic cosmology, yajña-theory, and later Vedāntic and Vaiṣṇava interpretation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Puruṣa is the Cosmic Person—the all-pervading Being who contains the universe and also transcends it. The hymn presents all worlds and beings as expressions of this one total reality.

It teaches that the universe arises through a primordial “all-offering” in which order, life, and sacred speech unfold from the One. Yajña is shown not only as a ritual act but as a cosmic principle of transformation and harmony.

Because it became a key text for explaining the unity behind diversity, the sacred basis of dharma, and the idea that Vedic speech and ritual mirror cosmic structure. It is widely recited in rituals and interpreted in Vedānta and devotional traditions.
