Inside Sukta 20

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

A direct plea to Vāta to breathe bhadra into the worshippers and set the mind in beneficent motion.

  2. Development

The hymn links inner inspiration to outer rite: the sacrificial order is stabilized through Agni, who embodies kṣema and reveals the path through attentive alignment (śruṣṭi).

  3. Climax

Agni is affirmed as the secure center of yajña—peace, offering, and the discovered way—drawing the gods toward him.

  4. Where it settles

The seer offers inspired thought and words to Agni (Ūrjo Napāt), asking for the total boon: impulse, sustaining strength, and a secure dwelling (sukṣiti).

The deity: Vāta with a turn to Agni as the ritual leader

  • In the VedaVāta is invoked as the moving, life-bearing current that can carry bhadra—auspiciousness and right inspiration—into the inner faculty of mind (manas). Agni is praised as the kṣema (peace/secure felicity), the very yajña with oblation, and the guide by whose obedience the path (gātu) is found.
  • Cosmic functionVāta circulates vitality and auspicious impulse through the worlds; Agni establishes the sacrificial order, conveys offerings to the gods, and opens the traversable path between human and divine realms.
  • Inner significanceVāta signifies prāṇa-like inspiration that clears and uplifts mental movement toward the good (bhadra); Agni signifies awakened will and discernment that stabilizes life into kṣema—right order, protection, and fruitful dwelling.

The seer

  • Vimadá (traditional attribution; some verses list/indicate him explicitly)A seer-poet associated with bringing manīṣā (inspired thought) and ordered speech to Agni, often emphasizing right-mindedness (sumati) and the securing of kṣema (peaceful well-being) through yajña.
