Sukta 10.130

Rishi

Traditionally attributed in Anukramaṇī to a seer of the late 10th maṇḍala (often unspecified in brief citations); hymn concerns yajña as cosmic weaving

Devata

Yajña / Viśvakarman-like sacrificial principle (cosmic rite as power)

Chandas

Triṣṭubh (predominant for this hymn section)

Inside Sukta 130

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

Yajña is introduced as a vast fabric stretched everywhere by threads and divine workmanship, woven by the Fathers.

  2. Development

The hymn turns to the technology of sacred speech—metres and chants—showing how deities and chandas mutually uphold the ritual cosmos.

  3. Climax

The seven divine seers, together with chant, metre, and measure, ‘turn inward’ and grasp the ancient path like charioteers seizing the reins—symbolizing mastery of rite and vision.

  4. Where it settles

The hymn settles on continuity and correctness: the inherited path is seen, held, and re-enacted through measured recitation and ordered offering.

The deity: Yajña

  • In the VedaYajña is envisioned not only as an offering but as an all-pervading fabric stretched by ‘threads’ and ‘divine works,’ sustained by Fathers (pitaraḥ) and realized through metres and chants.
  • Cosmic functionTo bind gods, ancestors, and humans into a single ordered process, generating and maintaining ṛta through correctly measured speech, offering, and intention.
  • Inner significanceThe disciplined weaving of attention: aligning thought (dhī), speech (vāc), and action (karma) so that one’s inner order mirrors cosmic order.

The seer

  • Anukramaṇī-attributed late 10th-maṇḍala seer (name uncertain)Ritual-speculative vision that interprets yajña, chandas, and stoma as cosmic principles rather than merely liturgical techniques.

Attributes of the deity

  • All-pervading ‘woven’ structure (tantu, tata)
  • Measured speech and metre (chandas, pramā)
  • Ancestral continuity (pitaraḥ, pūrveṣām panthāḥ)
  • Divine craftsmanship (devakarma)
  • Integrative power linking multiple deities and functions

Also by this seer

  • Associated broadly with the late RV 10 ‘speculative/ritual’ stratum.

The rite, step by step

  • Ācamana and saṅkalpa: establish intention to align speech and measure with ṛta.
  • Agnyādhāna/Agni-kindling or approach to the āhavanīya fire (where applicable).
  • Recite the sukta with attention to chandas, treating each verse as a ‘thread’ in the rite.
  • Make offerings in synchrony with key refrains/turns of thought (weaving imagery; metre-deity mapping).
  • Conclude with a brief silent contemplation: ‘holding the reins’—steadying mind and speech on the path of the ancients.

Offerings

  • Ghee (ājya) into Agni
  • Soma (where Soma context is present/evoked)
  • Oblations appropriate to the rite (havis), with dakṣiṇā according to tradition

Frequently Asked Questions

It teaches that sacrifice (yajña) is like a woven fabric spread through the whole cosmos, and that correct chant, metre, and measure keep that order steady.

Because the hymn treats metre (chandas) as a power that shapes and stabilizes sacred speech; by linking metres with deities, it shows how ritual sound supports cosmic order.

The Fathers (pitaraḥ) are ancestral powers who transmit the rite, and the seven seers are archetypal inspired knowers who follow the ancient path and ‘hold the reins’ of disciplined recitation and insight.
