Outer meaning

Indra, sovereign whose source is Truth, struck the serpent coiled around the flood and opened the all-nourishing paths for the wide movement of waters and powers.

Inner meaning

The inner gods, like eager champions, ‘release the worlds’ when Indra acts: consciousness-planes (bhuvaḥ) open when the illumined mind is founded in Satya (satyayoniḥ). The serpent (ahi) is the coiling subconscious habit that constricts the flow of the life-waters (arṇaḥ). By striking it, Indra opens inner channels (vartanīḥ)—paths of energy, perception, and movement—so the waters (currents of life-force and delight) can move widely and nourish all parts (viśvadhēnāḥ).

Universal truth

When intelligence is rooted in truth, it can break constricting patterns and reopen the natural circulation of life-energy, leading to a freer, more nourishing movement in the whole being.

Themes

opening of channels, serpent obstruction, sovereignty of Truth, world-release

Family tradition

The Gautama-Vāmadeva strain in Maṇḍala 4 often links Indra’s victory with Satya and the release of waters/light—suggesting an inner cosmology of blocked and liberated consciousness.

Significance

Vāmadeva’s vision here emphasizes ‘truth-born’ sovereignty: the mind becomes king only when it serves Satya, then it can liberate the worlds within.

Devata
Indra
Epithets
samrāṭ (sovereign), satyayoni (truth-sourced), vṛtrahan (implied by ahi-slaying)
Related deities
Varuṇa (ṛta/satya order), Soma (delight in the waters), Maruts (forces that aid Indra), Agni (will that prepares the sacrifice)

Cosmic role

Inner power

Truth-grounded illumination that uncoils the subconscious knot and restores wide circulation of energies.

Where it is used

Indra praise in Soma ritual contexts; vṛtra/ahi episode often accompanies offerings for strength and victory.
