अवर्धयन्त्सुभगं सप्त यह्वीः श्वेतं जज्ञानमरुषं महित्वा । शिशुं न जातमभ्यारुरश्वा देवासो अग्निं जनिमन्वपुष्यन् ॥
ávaṛdhayants subhágaṃ saptá yahvī́ḥ śvetáṃ jajñānám aruṣáṃ mahitvā́ | śíśuṃ na jātám abhy ā́rur aśvā́ devā́so agním jániman vapuṣyan ||
The seven mighty streams increased the fortunate Agni—white at birth, ruddy in greatness. Like horses running to a newborn child, the gods hastened to Agni; they fostered his birth and made his form grow.
The ‘seven streams’ are the sevenfold energies (often read as seven rivers, but inwardly the currents of consciousness/life) that nourish the emerging inner fire. Agni is ‘white’ at birth—pure, clear in initial awakening—and ‘ruddy’ in greatness—powerful, dynamic, transformative when fully grown. The ‘horses’ are vital energies (aśvāḥ) that rush toward the newborn psychic flame when it appears; the gods (higher powers) support and protect this nascent will so it can take form (vapuṣyan) and stabilize through stages of becoming (janiman).
When the inner flame awakens, many currents of life and consciousness can be harnessed to nourish it. Vital energy becomes a helper rather than a distraction when it runs toward the newborn truth within.
Agni-birth, Seven-waters, Growth-of-fire, Luminous-form
Ties tapas and disciplined energies to the growth of the inner Agni; emphasizes multi-force cooperation (seven streams, horses, gods).
A practical map of sādhanā: awaken the flame, then feed it through multiple energies and guide the vital powers to serve it.
The growing divine flame fostered by cosmic streams and gods; principle of evolution from purity to power.
Psychic fire that matures by nourishment from multiple energies; capacity to organize vital force for divine work.
Agni-kindling and mythic reinforcement of the fire’s growth

Vigorous and kinetic; imagery of rushing horses suits Triṣṭubh drive.
Energizing; evokes protective enthusiasm around a new inner resolve.
Supports the ritual ignition narrative: Agni’s growth through the ‘waters’ and the convergence of powers; used to strengthen the sense of increasing flame and its auspiciousness.
When strengthening the fire or invoking growth of Agni’s power in the rite.
Adding fuel/offerings; invoking the seven streams (water symbolism) and directing energies toward Agni.
Use when beginning a new discipline: chant to enlist ‘seven streams’ (sleep, food, breath, thought, emotion, work, devotion) to nourish the new flame.
saptá ‘seven’ often encodes completeness. aruṣa ‘ruddy’ is a common Agni epithet, marking fiery manifestation. janíman ‘birth/becoming’ stresses process. vapuṣ- relates to ‘form/beauty’, indicating the shaping of the divine force into a luminous embodiment.
Becoming (janíman), Totality (sevenfold powers), Form as luminous embodiment (vapus)
Agni grows rightly when supported by ordered streams—energies aligned to ṛta rather than scattered desire.
Purity (śveta) must be preserved as power (aruṣa) increases—truth without distortion.
Evolutionary growth: from concealed birth to luminous form; cooperation of forces in manifestation.
Integral Vedic psychology: transformation of vital (aśva) through psychic fire.
Streams = currents of prāṇa and consciousness; white = purity; red = dynamic force; horses = life-energy mobilized for the soul.
Nourish the newborn inner will with coordinated energies; convert vital ‘horses’ into allies.
Maṇipūra (fire) supported by Svādhiṣṭhāna (streams) and Mūlādhāra (stability)
Kapalabhāti gentle 30–60 strokes (to mobilize ‘horses’), then slow breathing while visualizing seven currents feeding a steady flame at the navel/heart.
Mobilized, protected growth; disciplined enthusiasm.
When a new aspiration appears, protect it from dispersion: gather energies (diet, sleep, speech, attention). Let the vital run toward the flame—express it as steady work, not restless craving.
Use Śākala svara marks for precision; keep energetic rise on ‘sapta yahvīḥ’ and ‘aśvāḥ’.
Let the first pāda be steady and descriptive; increase intensity on the horse-simile pāda; resolve with a stabilizing tone on ‘vapuṣyan’.
avardhayan: clear dhy cluster, subhagaṃ: nasal ‘ṃ’ before pause, śvetam: palatal ś, not s, aruṣam: retroflex ṣ, abhy ārur: keep ‘abhyā’ glide; do not break awkwardly, aśvāḥ: śv cluster; long āḥ at end
Bright, strong, invigorating; avoid harshness—keep a nourished warmth.
