Inside Sukta 165

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

The hymn opens with wonder and inquiry: by what harmony and inspired thought have the Maruts become perfectly mingled, chanting their virile force (1.165.1).

  2. Development

The dialogue sharpens into a question of agency and precedence: Indra speaks of his own ‘Indra-force’ and brilliance, while the Maruts’ presence is acknowledged as a powerful, collective impetus in the cosmic struggle and the making of beneficial paths.

  3. Climax

Indra’s decisive self-declaration: he slew Vṛtra by his own power and made the waters easy for humanity to traverse—transforming obstruction into luminous, workable order (1.165.8).

  4. Where it settles

The poet seals the negotiation with praise and invitation: ‘this is your chant,’ O Maruts—come to our embodied life so we may know and receive your vigorous, swift-giving host of strength (1.165.15).

The deity: Maruts

  • In the VedaThe Maruts are the youthful, many-formed storm-host—shining, swift, and loud—moving together “of one age and one home,” singing their strength, shaking heaven and earth, and accompanying Indra in battle and in the release of waters.
  • Cosmic functionThey embody the dynamic forces of storm and atmospheric energy: stirring winds, bringing rain, clearing obstructions, and amplifying Indra’s thunderous action so that waters and fertility flow for living beings.
  • Inner significancePsychologically, the Maruts signify the surge of collective prāṇa and courageous impulse—disciplined, harmonized energies that can either scatter the mind or, when unified, empower decisive action and inspired speech.

The seer

  • Agastya MānavāMānava (Agastya tradition; later associated with the Agastya gotra) · A major Vedic seer linked with powerful hymns and with the Indra–Marut dialogic style that probes the balance between divine powers, especially Indra’s sovereignty and the Maruts’ collective might.

  • Concluding invitation: explicitly call the Maruts to “come” with their host and settle the rite with a final svāhā-like offering and silent contemplation.

Frequently Asked Questions

It is a hymn in the form of a dialogue where the Maruts are praised for their unified storm-power, and Indra asserts his own decisive role in slaying Vṛtra and freeing the waters.

The line emphasizes Indra’s sovereignty and independent might, while still keeping the Maruts within the sacred conversation as allied forces whose collective energy shapes the storm and supports cosmic order.
