Sukta 53

Rishi: Atharvanic tradition (exact r̥ṣi attribution for this verse not securely fixed across indices)

Devata: Prāṇa and Apāna (vital breaths)

Chandas: Anuṣṭubh (approx.)

Inside Sukta 53

How it unfolds

  1. How it opens

Begins with an āyuṣya cry (“Long life!”) and a rescue-frame: the patient is loosed from constraining forces (ban/imprecation) and Death is driven back by divine physicians.

  2. What it asks

That Prāṇa not abandon the person and that Apāna not carry him away; that vitality re-enter and remain established, arresting wasting.

  3. Where its power lies

Breath is treated as an obedient, yoke-able power—entering like draught-oxen into the stall—so the ‘treasure against decline’ may grow unharmed here.

  4. How it closes

The patient is entrusted to the Saptarṣis for protective conveyance (svasti) into old age, sealing recovery as a guarded life-trajectory.

Kind of hymn

Bhaisajya (Healing)

What it is for

To avert imminent death, restore and stabilize prāṇa/apāna, neutralize curse/ban/hostile seizure, and ensure safe passage into health and old age.

Who it is for

Atharvanic healer (bhiṣaj), family priests/caretakers, and communities performing emergency life-protection rites for the sick or wasting patient.

Also used as

  • Āyuṣya
  • Rakṣā
  • Śāntika

The deity

Prāṇa and Apāna are personified vital breaths whose orderly presence sustains life, strength, and recovery; their departure signals collapse and death. The Aśvins function as swift rescuers and restorers, while Agni as Bhiṣaj embodies curative fire/skill that repels hostile constraints such as bans and imprecations.

Powers of the deity

  • Reinstates and regulates vital breath and bodily vitality
  • Prevents the ‘going away’ of life-force at a critical moment
  • Repels Mṛtyu/Yama’s approach and reverses fatal seizure
  • Counters jarimán (wasting/decline) and supports growth/prosperity of life
  • Places the patient under protective conveyance (safe-conduct) toward old age

Why the deity is called

Invoked to keep breath anchored in the patient, to thrust death back, and to secure an unharmed, enduring life-course—especially when wasting, faintness, or a death-sign is perceived.

The seer

  • Atharvanic (anonymous/variable attribution in indices)Atharvan. Bhaiṣajya and āyuṣya charms: restoring breath, averting death, countering wasting/decline, and establishing protective guardianship for convalescence.

Other hymns of this seer

  • AV 7.54 (adjacent breath/life-protection material in some recensional groupings)
  • AV 6.90 (Prāṇa-related healing and life-support themes; attribution varies by edition)
  • AV 3.11 (āyuṣya/longevity motifs; attribution varies by index)

Preparing for the rite

  • Seat the patient comfortably with head supported; ensure calm breathing and quiet space.
  • Perform basic purification (ācamanam) and establish a protective intention (saṅkalpa) for āyuṣya and bhaiṣajya.
  • Kindle a small, safe fire or lamp if customary (as support for Agni Bhiṣaj), without requiring a full śrauta setup.

The rite

  • Recite the hymn over the patient, directing key verses toward the chest/breath region (hṛd/uras) as a ‘calling back’ of prāṇa and ‘holding’ of apāna.
  • On verses addressing Mṛtyu/Yama, gesture outward/backward (symbolic ‘thrusting away’).
  • On the Saptarṣi-commitment verse, circle the patient lightly (paridadāmi sense) to enact protective encirclement and safe-conduct.
  • Conclude with a brief silent pause, letting the patient breathe steadily while the reciter maintains protective focus.

What it needs

  • None required by the hymn text (voice and intention are primary).
  • Optional: clean water for sipping/sprinkling; a small lamp/fire as supportive symbolism.

When

Performed immediately when signs of collapse, breath-irregularity, wasting, or a death-fear arises; may be repeated at dawn/dusk during recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions

It is a healing and longevity hymn used when someone is weak, wasting, or feared to be near death—meant to restore breath (prāṇa/apāna) and push Death’s influence away.

In Atharvavedic healing, the vital breaths are treated as living powers that can be summoned, stabilized, and commanded not to depart, because their steadiness is identified with life itself.

No specific substance is required by the hymn’s wording. The primary ‘medicine’ is mantra-recitation and protective intent, though some traditions may add water-sprinkling or a small lamp/fire as supportive ritual context.
