Sukta 125

Rishi: Traditionally RV-derived; in AV 20 the material is largely Rigvedic reprise (Anukramaṇī attribution follows the RV hymn-source).

Devata: Indra

Chandas: Triṣṭubh (RV-style)

Inside Sukta 125

How it unfolds

  1. How it opens

The hymn opens by commanding Indra to drive away foes from the eastern quarter and then systematically from west, north, and from below, so the patron may rejoice in Indra’s wide shelter.

  2. What it asks

Expulsion of enemies/hostility from all directions and establishment of secure protection and success in action.

  3. Where its power lies

Mythic validation is supplied through the narrative frame (Aśvins aiding Indra against Namuci), presenting divine victory as repeatable efficacy for the present rite.

  4. How it closes

It seals the work by asking Indra to remove hatred still farther away and to place the worshippers in his good favor, welfare, and kindly concord (saumanasa).

Kind of hymn

Abhicarika (Apotropaic/Hostile-warding) with royal-victory coloration

What it is for

Expel enemies and malignant forces from all sides, establish protective dominion under Indra, and remove hatred to restore welfare and friendly concord.

Who it is for

A patron/king (rājanya) and his household/retinue; also any community seeking protection from hostility and factional hatred.

Also used as

  • Rakṣoghna
  • Rājanya (royal-victory coloration)
  • Saṃmanasya/Śāntika (concord-making close)

The deity

Indra here is the sovereign protector and battle-overpowerer who clears hostile presences from the quarters and grants the patron a broad, safe dwelling-space (uru śarman), culminating in welfare and concord.

Powers of the deity

  • Drives away enemies and demonic opposition from all directions (dik-apanayana)
  • Overpowers and expels hatred (dveṣas) and hostile intent
  • Grants wide protection (uru śarman) and secure settlement
  • Ensures victory and successful completion of deeds (karmasu avat)
  • Transforms conflict into auspicious harmony (saumanasa) under divine favor

Why the deity is called

To banish foes/hostilities from every quarter, secure victory and safe ‘space’ for the patron, and distance hatred so the community abides in welfare and concord.

The seer

  • RV-derived seer (Anukramaṇī follows the Rigvedic source for this Indra-stuti cluster)Angiras. Protective and hostile-warding recitations (rakṣoghna/abhicārika) framed as royal victory prayers; expulsion of enemies from the quarters and securing kṣatra-like stability.

Other hymns of this seer

  • AV 20 (multiple RV-reprise Indra hymns in the same anuvāka/cluster)
  • RV source-hymn corresponding to AV 20.125 (Indra-stuti with ‘drive away the foes from all quarters’ motif)

Preparing for the rite

  • Choose a clean, quiet place oriented with awareness of the quarters (east/west/north/south and below).
  • Establish a simple protective boundary (e.g., swept ground, seated reciter, intention of dik-śuddhi).
  • If performed for a leader, seat the patron behind/near the reciter as the intended beneficiary (yajamāna-prayoga).

The rite

  • Recite the hymn with clear emphasis on the directional expulsions (esp. 20.125.1), mentally ‘pushing’ hostility outward from the quarters.
  • At the Aśvin-episode (20.125.4), recall mythic precedent as assurance of present aid in difficult undertakings.
  • Conclude with the distancing of hatred and a deliberate wish for saumanasa (20.125.7), optionally followed by a brief silent resolve of non-hostility within the group.

What it needs

  • None required by the hymn; optional ritual water for sprinkling the space and patron as a general Atharvanic protective adjunct.
  • Surā appears in the mythic narrative (20.125.4) but is not required as a rite-substance in this sukta’s basic use.

When

Before departure to contest/assembly/battle; at dawn or prior to public action; also when factional hatred is perceived in the community.

Frequently Asked Questions

It is used to push away enemies or hostile forces from all directions and to establish the patron in Indra’s broad protection, ending with the removal of hatred and the gaining of concord.

The Aśvins’ drinking with Namuci and their aiding Indra functions as a mythic precedent: it assures that divine help can overcome difficult, even demonic, opposition in the present situation.

No required substances are stated for its basic recitation. Surā appears only in the mythic narration; the hymn’s efficacy is primarily through recitation and the directional expulsion intent.
