Sukta 113

Sukta 10.113

Devata

Indra (supported by Dyāvā-Pṛthivī and Viśve Devāḥ)

Chandas

Trishtubh (probable; requires verification)

Inside Sukta 113

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

Indra’s force is to be upheld—Heaven and Earth, together with the All-Gods, are invoked to support his surge of power as Soma magnifies his wise resolve.

  2. Development

The hymn expands from energizing Indra through Soma to narrating his battle-function: his intensities and wrath move to decisive action against obstruction.

  3. Climax

Indra’s cutting apart of Vṛtra—who holds the waters and is wrapped in darkness—marks the turning point where blockage yields to release and order.

  4. Where it settles

The myth becomes a direct prayer: Indra is asked to bring many boons, lead the worshippers across all difficulties, and grant a wide, firm foundation today.

The deity: Indra

  • In the VedaIndra is the Soma-strengthened hero, possessor of śuṣma (driving force) and ojas (might), who breaks obstacles and releases the waters; the hymn frames him as aided by Heaven–Earth and accompanied by the All-Gods in upholding his power.
  • Cosmic functionHe restores cosmic circulation by overcoming the withholder (Vṛtra), freeing the waters/light from darkness and re-establishing order, movement, and fertility.
  • Inner significanceIndra signifies the awakened will and victorious courage that cuts through inner inertia and obscurity, releasing clarity, energy, and forward motion; Soma symbolizes the uplift that intensifies discernment and resolve.
