Sukta 1.166
The Maruts, whose might is spread through the regions, rush forward self-driven. All worlds, even firm dwellings, fear their many-colored march when they advance with outstretched spears.
These are the irresistible forces of transformation: their tapas (taviṣī) weaves through all planes (rajāṃsi), meaning the yogic pressure touches every layer of our being. They are ‘self-driven’—once invoked, the evolutionary energy moves by its own law. The ‘worlds’ and ‘firm abodes’ (harmyā) are our established structures—habits, fixed mental houses, rigid vital formations. These tremble when the multiform movement (citra yāma) of the Maruts advances with ‘spears’ (ṛṣṭi): sharp discriminations and decisive forces that pierce concealment and complacency.
Real growth disrupts rigid structures. When transformative energy awakens, the old inner ‘houses’ shake, but this fear is the threshold of liberation and wider life.
irresistible advance, breaking fixedness, pervasion of spaces, divine discipline
The Agastya Marut cycle often portrays the awe-inspiring advance of divine forces and the necessity of steadiness amid upheaval.
Agastya gives language to the yogic ‘storm’: transformation as a disciplined onrush that confronts fear and rigidity.
They traverse and energize all regions, shaking worlds and establishing new order by forceful advance.
Evolutionary Shakti in the vital and mind: rapid, decisive, many-modeled action that breaks inertia.
Marut praise in Indra-Marut contexts; invoking force for victory over obstacles.

Surging, martial; strong forward ‘rush’ built into the cadence.
Invokes courage and readiness for change; can awaken latent energy and confront inner fear.
Chanted to invoke the Maruts’ irresistible forward movement to break inertia/obstruction and to establish a ‘woven’ right order in the sacrificer’s field.
When calling for powerful assistance and protection amid conflict/obstruction (outer or inner).
Recited as stotra/praise; mentally ‘aligning’ with Marut advance rather than resisting.
Use when facing major transitions—chant to accept necessary disruption and invite disciplined energy.
avyata ‘was woven’ from √ve/√vī ‘weave’ (PIE *weh₁-): suggests formation of order in space—Ṛta as ‘woven law’. taviṣī ‘force’ (intensified energy) frames the Maruts as dynamic shapers. ṛṣṭi ‘spear’ from √ṛṣ/√arṣ? (semantic: thrusting): symbolically ‘directed will’. yāma ‘course’ from √yā ‘go’: not random violence but regulated movement, hence psychological discipline within power.
Ṛta as woven order, disciplined force (sva-yata), fear as reaction of lower formations to higher power
Their advance enforces Ṛta by shaking false stability and clearing space for the Vast.
Fear arises where truth is resisted; the mantra pushes toward alignment with the true movement.
Weaving force through regions: manifestation as interpenetration of planes by dynamic power.
Aurobindonian psychology of transformation: higher force descends and reorganizes lower formations.
storm season (suggested)
Storm advance = transformative surge; trembling houses = ego-structures; spears = penetrating will/discernment.
Welcoming transformative force without panic; observe fear as rigidity releasing.
manipura (force, onset, disciplined power)
Brisk, controlled exhale emphasis (without strain) to embody forward rush; then pause in stillness to stabilize.
Dynamic concentration—steadfast center amid strong movement.
When inner structures shake, do not contract; offer fear into the inner fire and let discernment ‘spear’ confusion.
Keep sharp udātta rises on action words (prá, adhrajan, bháyante, citró, yā́maḥ).
Strike consonant clusters cleanly (sv-y, pr-y); maintain forward cadence across caesura.
taviṣībhir: ṣ retroflex; long ī, svayatāso: clear ‘sva-ya’ separation, harmyā: aspirated h, clear r, prayatāsv ṛṣṭiṣu: keep ṛṣṭi with vocalic ṛ and retroflex ṣṭ
Firm, projecting, martial clarity; avoid shouting—keep controlled power.
