Indra (with Maruts)

Inside Sukta 100

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

Indra is hailed as irresistible and ever-ready—his advance is ‘unseized’ like the Sun’s, and his Vṛtra-slaying force is present in every encounter.

  2. Development

The hymn builds a practical theology of aid: Indra with the Maruts wins riches through both kin and non-kin, secures waters, and grants thriving progeny and increase.

  3. Climax

The repeated appeal “marutvān no bhavatv indra ūtī” (may Indra with the Maruts be our help) concentrates the hymn’s peak request: immediate, effective protection and victory-power.

  4. Where it settles

It resolves in a lasting safeguard: Indra is asked to be the constant advocate, and the blessing is widened by Mitra–Varuṇa, Aditi, Sindhu, Earth, and Heaven so the gain endures and is not beguiled away.

The deity: Indra

  • In the VedaIndra is lauded as vṛtrahā (slayer of Vṛtra), the most potent and victorious leader whose force appears in every onset; he advances like the Sun, unseized and unhindered, and comes with the storm-host Maruts as his comrades and energies.
  • Cosmic functionHe releases and wins the waters, breaks obstructing powers, secures vāja (victorious force and bounty), and stabilizes the world-order by defeating chaos and opening the channels of life.
  • Inner significanceIndra signifies the awakened will and courageous intelligence that breaks inner obstruction (vṛtra), frees the ‘waters’ of inspiration and vitality, and converts struggle into strength; the Maruts represent the surging life-forces that amplify and accompany this victorious power.

The seer

  • Ṛjraśva (Vārṣāgira tradition)Vārṣāgira / Angirasa-associated poet-circle · A seer associated with the Vārṣāgira hymnic cluster, known for vigorous Indra-stuti emphasizing battle-aid, communal prosperity (waters, cattle, offspring), and the refrain-like appeal to Indra accompanied by the Maruts (marutvān).

Frequently Asked Questions

Because Indra’s power is portrayed as arriving with the Maruts—storm-like companions who amplify his force—so the prayer asks for help that is swift, energetic, and victorious.

It asks for vāja (winning strength and success), wealth, released waters (life-sustaining abundance), and thriving children and descendants, along with protection from harm and deception.

The hymn closes by widening the blessing: Indra grants victory and advocacy, and these deities and cosmic supports are invoked to stabilize, increase, and sustain that good for the community.
