Sukta 8.15

Devata

Indra

Inside Sukta 15

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

A direct musical summons: sing out to Indra, the much-invoked, and bring the mighty power near through inspired speech.

  2. Development

The hymn elaborates Indra’s greatness as expansive indriya, forceful śuṣma, and wise kratu; inspiration (dhiṣaṇā) is portrayed as sharpening his vajra.

  3. Climax

The image of dhiṣaṇā sharpening the desirable thunderbolt—power guided by discernment—marks the peak: victorious force becomes precise and effective.

  4. Where it settles

A final prayer for welfare and settlement: may all forms of power enter us; gladden Indra for victory as Śacīpati, ensuring increase and triumph.

The deity: Indra

  • In the VedaIndra is hailed as puruhūta (much-invoked) and puruṣṭuta (much-praised), the mighty wielder of the vajra (thunderbolt), strengthened by hymns and sharpened by dhiṣaṇā (inspired discernment). He is approached as a present power who can be made to ‘dwell’ with the singer as victory-force.
  • Cosmic functionChampion of ṛta in the dynamic world: breaker of obstacles, releaser of powers, giver of victory and expansion, protector of the sacrificer and the people’s increase and settlement (kṣaya).
  • Inner significanceIndra represents the awakened heroic will—decisive energy guided by intelligence (kratu) that cleaves confusion and inertia; the vajra becomes the sharpened inner instrument that cuts through darkness and enables accomplishment.
