daṇḍā́ ivéd go-ajanāsa āsan pári-cchinnā bharatā́ arbhakā́saḥ | ábhavac ca pura-etā́ vasiṣṭhá ā́d ít tṛtsūnā́ṁ víśo aprathanta ||
The Bharatas, though young, stood compact and well-knit like staves, born of the Cow. Vasiṣṭha became their leader in front; then the peoples of the Tṛtsus spread and grew.
The Bharata-forces are the ‘bearers’—parts of the being that can carry the divine fire and truth. Though still immature (arbhakāsaḥ), they stand firm like staves when they are ‘well-knit’—integrated and disciplined. Their birth from the Cow (go-ajanāsaḥ) is not cattle lineage but origin from the Rays of Light/Knowledge: right understanding generates right collective strength. Vasiṣṭha as puraetā (front-leader) symbolizes the established inner wisdom leading the life-forces; then the faculties of the right-moving nature (Tṛtsus) expand in ordered power.
Lasting strength arises from integration and right knowledge. When wisdom leads from the front, the many parts of life reorganize and expand harmoniously rather than scattering.
lineage-myth, inner-formation, leadership-of-illumination, expansion-of-consciousness
Vasiṣṭha as guiding priest and leader of the Tṛtsu-Bharatas; transmitter of a disciplined, truth-aligned collective yoga (in symbolic reading).
Vasiṣṭha embodies ‘established’ consciousness that can organize immature forces into a coherent instrument for the divine work.
Illumination births and organizes the collective powers; right leadership establishes expansion without disorder.
Integration (collection of energies) and right guidance; the ability to stand firm and then widen.
Lineage/itihāsa-like praise within family books; recited to affirm cohesion and leadership in the rite.

Compact, marching rhythm matching ‘well-knit’ standing; then a release into expansion in the final pāda.
Instills steadiness and cohesion; supports building an ‘inner team’ that can act under guidance.
Likely recitation in contexts affirming priestly lineage and right-leading (purohita/puraḥ-etṛ motifs); applicable within Soma-sacrifice settings where clan/ṛṣi legitimacy and leadership are affirmed (general Śrauta Soma framework rather than a single fixed prayoga).
When establishing the officiant’s authority and the sacrificer’s collective alignment; also in recitations honoring seer-lineage.
Narrative stuti that strengthens group identity and right order.
For teams/families: chant as a ‘cohesion verse’ before joint work; inwardly, use to integrate conflicting parts of oneself under a higher intention.
Key terms: (1) go-ajanāsaḥ: go (multivalent: 'cow' and 'ray/light') + ajana (from √jan 'be born, generate'); inner reading justified by go as 'light-ray' in many RV contexts. (2) paricchinnāḥ: pari- + √chid 'cut, delineate' → 'bounded/defined' hence 'compact, well-knit'. (3) puraḥ-etā: puraḥ 'in front' + √i 'go' → 'one who goes before', a forerunner-leader. (4) aprathanta: aorist 3pl from √prath 'spread, widen, become manifest'—psychologically, expansion of consciousness and community-force.
Ṛta (ordered formation and right expansion), collective integration of faculties (viśaḥ as powers of the being)
‘Well-bounded’ (paricchinna) suggests energies held within ṛta rather than scattering.
Birth from go (light/knowledge) indicates truth as the generative source of right formation.
Formation of a collective instrument: from light → cohesion → leadership → expansion.
Psychological Veda: tribes/clans as inner powers; seer as organizing consciousness.
Rod = spinal firmness/discipline; cow = rays of illumination; compact ranks = collected prāṇa and mind; spreading = widened awareness.
Collect scattered parts; stand firm; let wisdom lead; then allow expansion.
mūlādhāra (stability) to anāhata (expansion)
Box breathing (4-4-4-4) for ‘paricchinna’ cohesion; then 6-0-6 for ‘aprathanta’ widening.
Integrated readiness → stable wideness.
Visualize your energies as a compact, aligned formation. On ‘puraetā’, place the inner guide (higher discernment) in front. End by resting in the feeling of ‘wide space’ without losing structure.
RV accents; keep ‘daṇḍā iva’ crisp and percussive; broaden slightly on ‘aprathanta’.
Pause lightly after each simile phrase; emphasize ‘puraetā vasiṣṭha’ as the leadership pivot.
‘daṇḍā’: retroflex ḍ; nasal ṇ., ‘go-ajanāsaḥ’: keep compound flow; soft ‘go’ then clear ‘j’., ‘paricchinnā’: double n sound; avoid swallowing ‘cch’., ‘tṛtsūnām’: long ū; keep tṛts cluster distinct.
Steady, disciplined, slightly martial; end with open resonance.
