Devata

Manyu with Marut/Agni associations

Chandas

Triṣṭubh (probable)

Ten hymn przyzywa Manyu, bojową furię, prawy zapał i niezłomną wolę, jako boskiego sprzymierzeńca, który zaprzęga marutopodobne moce wojenne do jednego rydwanu i pędzi je przeciw przeszkodom. Szkoli klany (viśaṃ-viśam) do zwycięstwa, przemienia mowę w nieustanny okrzyk bojowy i dąży do zintegrowanego dobrobytu oraz ochrony, wreszcie prosząc, by wrogów pochwycono wewnętrzny lęk i wycofali się.

Inside Sukta 84

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

Manyu is invoked as the charioteer-force uniting the Marut-like heroes; weapons are sharpened and the fiery host is urged forward against obstruction (10.84.1).

  2. Development

The hymn frames Manyu as the single coordinating power among many, training each ‘clan’ for battle and turning speech into an unbroken, luminous victory-cry (10.84.4).

  3. Climax

Manyu’s force becomes both external and internal supremacy: coordinated power, fearless advance, and the certainty of triumph over resistance.

  4. Where it settles

Varuṇa and Manyu together bestow integrated wealth and ordered power; enemies, carrying fear in their hearts, retreat and hide, defeated (10.84.7).

The deity: Manyu

  • In the VedaManyu is praised as a godlike power of fierce impulse and heroic ardour, moving with Marut-style might and appearing in Agni-like fiery forms (agnirūpāḥ). He is invoked as the ‘One among the many’ who can marshal the tribes/energies into coordinated battle and make the war-cry luminous and effective.
  • Cosmic functionTo supply the surge of force that breaks obstruction, protects the community, and converts scattered powers into a single victorious momentum; when paired with Varuṇa, Manyu is tempered and aligned with ṛta (cosmic order).
  • Inner significanceTransmuted anger into courage, resolve, and focused will—an inner ‘battle-fire’ that defeats fear, inertia, and hostility, while remaining governed by truth and right order.

The seer

  • Manyu-cycle voice (traditional attribution uncertain)A distinctive late-Rigvedic poetic voice that personifies Manyu (wrath/ardour) as a deity and channels it into disciplined, victorious power aligned with dharma/ṛta rather than mere rage.

Frequently Asked Questions

In RV 10.84, Manyu is treated as a divine power: fierce ardour that can be invoked, guided, and used to overcome obstruction. It is not uncontrolled rage, but disciplined force aligned with victory and protection.

The hymn links Manyu with Marut-like storm-power (collective heroic energies) and Agni-like fire-form (agnirūpāḥ), showing Manyu as both the surge of force and the burning clarity that drives action.

It suggests power joined with order: Varuṇa represents ṛta (law, restraint, truth), and Manyu represents drive and courage. Together they yield a complete prosperity—strength that is effective and ethically steady.
