Sukta 10.147

Devata

Indra (implied by adri-vaḥ) / Manyu as Indra’s wrath-power

Mantras

Mantra 1

Ty, nieskalany, swymi mocami formowania zgniótłeś przebiegłego władającego formami, Vṛtrę, umysłem szukającym chwały. Mężowie wybierają cię w bitwach o Światło; wybierają cię we wszystkich ofiarach i czynach poświęcenia.

Mantra 3

Bądź uważny wśród tych hojnych patronów, o często wzywany Maghavan, tych, którzy osiągnęli twoją wielkość dawania. Śpiewają w swoim potomstwie i rodzie, w swoich opiekuńczych kręgach; zdobywcy natchnionej inteligencji, wzywają pełnię siły, nieuchwytnego bogactwa.

Mantra 4

On zaprawdę teraz raduje się w ekstazie dobrze podtrzymanej pełni, kto postrzega jej szybko poruszającą się moc. O Maghavanie, ofiarnik, którego dar powiększa cię, szybko przynosi Wadżę, pełnię siły, i bogactwa, z pomocą bohaterskich mocy wewnątrz.

Mantra 5

Inside Sukta 147

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

Trust is placed in Indra’s Manyu—the primal wrath-power remembered through the Vṛtra-slaying and the opening of the waters.

  2. Development

The hymn shifts from cosmic myth to present ritual society: Indra is asked to be attentive among generous patrons and to strengthen singers, offspring, and protective boundaries.

  3. Climax

Indra’s awe-making force is reaffirmed as the power that shakes Heaven and Earth and yet concretely yields ‘unseizable wealth’ and victorious strength to worshippers.

  4. Where it settles

The prayer ends with a mature image of Indra as orderly and non-deceptive like Mitra-Varuṇa, compassionately apportioning wealth like a father to his people.

The deity: Indra

  • In the VedaIndra is the adri-vaḥ (stone/bolt-wielder), Maghavan (the bountiful), and Puruhūta (much-invoked), whose might breaks obstruction and wins the waters, cattle, and wealth for his people.
  • Cosmic functionHe is the cosmic breaker of bonds—slayer of Vṛtra, releaser of waters, and restorer of movement, rain, and life; he also stabilizes the human order by empowering patrons and protecting lineage and settlement.
  • Inner significanceManyu signifies the disciplined surge of will and courageous indignation that destroys inner obstruction (fear, inertia, falsehood) and releases the ‘waters’ of clarity, energy, and inspiration; Indra becomes the awakened force that turns pressure into liberation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Indra is the main deity, but the hymn highlights Manyu as Indra’s primal wrath-power—the force by which he defeats Vṛtra and releases the waters.

On the cosmic level it recalls Indra breaking Vṛtra’s obstruction so waters can flow; inwardly it points to breaking inner blocks so energy, clarity, and inspiration can move freely.

It asks Indra to act with orderly wisdom and fairness—“not a deceiver”—so prosperity is protected and distributed rightly, like a benevolent guardian and father.
