Sukta 1.94
पूर्वो देवा भवतु सुन्वतो रथोऽस्माकं शंसो अभ्यस्तु दूढ्यः । तदा जानीतोत पुष्यता वचोऽग्ने सख्ये मा रिषामा वयं तव ॥
pū́rvo devā bhavatu sunvató rátho ’smā́kaṃ śáṃso abhy àstu dū́ḍhyaḥ | tád ā́ jānītotá puṣyatā váco ’gne sakhyé mā́ riṣāmā vayáṃ táva ||
Niech rydwan tłoczącego idzie pierwszy, o bogowie; niech nasze słowo uwielbienia będzie niesione naprzód i mocno ustanowione. Wiedz to i wspieraj wypowiedź. O Agni, w twojej przyjaźni niech nie doznamy krzywdy - niech będziemy bezpieczni w twej mocy.
Let the chariot of the presser go first, O gods; let our praise/affirmation be carried forward and firmly established. Know this and foster the utterance. Prayer for safety in Agni’s friendship.
The ‘presser’ (sunvataḥ) is the inner yogin pressing Soma—extracting bliss/essence from experience. The ‘chariot’ is the dynamic movement of consciousness and life-force that carries the offering forward. The prayer ‘pūrvo… rathaḥ’ asks that this movement be given precedence: let the divine powers lead the journey, not the ego. ‘Śaṃsa’ (affirmation/praise) is the true word of the soul; it must be ‘dūḍhyaḥ’—firmly held, not scattered by doubt. Agni is asked to recognize (jānīta) the intention and to increase (puṣyatā) the mantra-word so it becomes effective power (vāc as force).
Spiritual progress requires that the inner movement be led by higher powers and that one’s word of truth be steadily affirmed and strengthened until it becomes a living force.
priority of the right movement, efficacy of speech, Soma-pressing aspiration, divine support of mantra
Ātreya hymns often emphasize the efficacy of vāc (the uttered truth) and the right leading of the sacrifice’s movement.
The seer links Soma-pressing (inner delight) with the forward drive of the chariot (life-movement) and the establishing of the true word—core elements of transformative yoga.
Sets the sacrifice in motion and makes the hymn effective; connects human word to divine hearing.
Ignites and strengthens mantra-vāc; gives forward momentum to the soul’s aspiration and bliss-seeking.
Soma-pressing context (allusive) and Agni-hymn recitation to propel the rite; could accompany moments of ‘sending forth’ offerings/praises.

4 × ~11 syllables
Processional, forward-rolling; suited to imagery of chariot and carrying-forward.
Energizes aspiration and strengthens resolve; the refrain seals the movement in protection.
Soma-pressing milieu (sunvat); prayer that the rite’s vehicle and word go foremost and succeed; used to strengthen the efficacy of recitation.
During Soma-related sequences or when urging the gods and the hymn forward; before key offerings.
Recite while pressing/mentally ‘pressing’ Soma and offering into Agni; intention-setting for successful rite.
Use as an ‘intention mantra’ before practice/work: ask that the higher lead, and that one’s truth-word be made steady and effective.
sunvat ‘pressing’ from √su ‘press Soma’ also suggests extracting essence; psychologically, pressing out the delight/strength from experience. vacas from √vac ‘speak’ is word-power as formative vibration. ā-jānīta from √jñā ‘know’ indicates divine recognition/ratification. puṣy- from √puṣ ‘nourish’ asks for growth of the mantra’s efficacy.
mantra as formative power (vacas), divine ratification (jñā) and nourishment (puṣ)
The ‘first chariot’ symbolizes the right precedence and alignment of forces—ṛta in motion.
A firmly established śaṃsa/vacaḥ becomes satya—word that realizes.
Speech as creative power; movement (ratha) as manifestation’s dynamism.
Vedic mantra-yoga: vāc + tapas (pressing) generating ananda (Soma) and right action.
Chariot = prāṇa-dynamism carrying consciousness; Soma = delight-essence distilled from life; word = formative vibration.
Let the divine lead the life-movement; establish one clear soul-affirmation and nourish it until it becomes force.
Vishuddha (vāc/mantra) with Manipura (drive)
Brisk-energetic but controlled: 6-6 breathing (inhale/exhale equal) while mentally repeating the key intention; then slow down for the refrain.
Focused dynamism; mantra-powered clarity.
Choose a single truthful resolve (śaṃsa). Chant the verse, then sit silently feeling the ‘chariot’ of prāṇa align behind that resolve, led by Agni rather than impulse.
Tri-svara; keep a lifted contour on ‘pūrvo’ and ‘ratho’; the imperative ‘puṣyatā’ benefits from clear udātta emphasis.
Mark the forward-driving cadence in pāda 1; give a slight pause after pāda 2 before ‘tad ā jānīta’. Refrain steady and even.
‘ratho ’smākam’: observe avagraha; avoid adding extra vowel between o and ’s., ‘śaṃso’: nasalization on ‘ṃ’ clear but light., ‘puṣyatā’: retroflex ‘ṣ’, keep ‘y’ glide clean.
Bright, processional, uplifting; confident but not rushed.
