Proposal for Rāma’s Installation as Heir-Apparent
Spoken by King DaśarathaSetting: Ayodhya

Although this is what I would like to do, please suggest alternative ways of achieving the welfare (of this kingdom). Deliberations by the unbiased (on this issue) may bring good.
What pleases the ruler is not automatically what benefits the realm; impartial deliberation yields superior outcomes and prevents harm.
Practical viveka: pause, consult, and choose hita over priya; supports daily ethical clarity.
Preference (rāga) is subordinated to welfare (hita), akin to sattvic buddhi choosing the good over the merely pleasing.
Kaṭha Upaniṣad’s śreyas (good) over preyas (pleasant) resonates strongly with ‘prīti’ vs ‘hita’.
Kaṭha Upaniṣad 1.2 (śreyas/preyas); Mahābhārata Śānti Parva (nīti: impartial counsel and deliberation)
Dharmaśāstra/nīti literature on madhyasthatā and mantra
Ayodhyākāṇḍa: later failures of impartiality in Kaikeyī-Mantharā episode contrast with this ideal
Anuṣṭup (śloka)

Mandra-madhyama
Impartial deliberation is dharmic decision-making: personal preference should yield to what best serves collective welfare.
Daśaratha explicitly invites unbiased debate and alternative proposals, even against his own preference.
Fair-mindedness and commitment to the common good over personal desire.
