agníḥ sū́ryaś candrámā bhū́mir ā́po dyaúr antárikṣaṃ pradíśo díśaś ca | ārtavā́ ṛtúbhiḥ saṃvidā́nā anéna mā trivṛ́tā pārayantu
Agni, the Sun, the Moon, Earth, the Waters, Heaven, Mid-air, the fore-directions and the directions—seasonal powers, in accord with the seasons—by this (charm) with threefold (aid) let them carry me safely across.
Agni, Słońce, Księżyc, Ziemia, Wody, Niebo, Przestrzeń pośrodku, kierunki przednie i kierunki, moce sezonowe w zgodzie z porami roku, niech ten czar z troistą pomocą przeprowadzi mnie bezpiecznie na drugą stronę.
A cosmic enlistment: fire, sun, moon, earth, waters, heaven, mid-air, all directions and fore-directions, and seasonal powers aligned with seasons are invoked to carry the speaker safely across by a ‘threefold’ aid.
The threatened self re-anchors in a total map of reality—elements, space (directions), and time (seasons). Anxiety is ‘carried across’ by restoring trust in order (ṛta) and by constructing a threefold support (body–breath–mind or past–present–future).
Safety arises when life is aligned with the whole: matter, space, and time cooperate when one moves in accord with order rather than fragmentation.
To enlist the entire ordered cosmos—elements, directions, and seasons—to ‘carry’ the patient safely through danger, stabilizing life within ṛta-aligned time.

Sāyaṇa construes the list as a totalizing invocation of cosmic supports (lokas, elements, quarters, time). Their ‘agreement’ (saṃvid) with ṛtu signifies alignment with ṛta (right order), removing disorder that shortens life. ‘trivṛt’ is taken as triple protection/threefold rite (often linked to tripartite worlds or triple cord/amulet), enabling safe passage beyond peril.
Atharvanic healer tradition (Āyuṣya/apotropaic safeguarding)
Cosmic-totality invocations for protection; aligning patient with ṛta through spatial-temporal enclosure (directions + seasons).
A hallmark Atharvanic move: enlist not a single deity but the entire ordered cosmos as a protective ‘system’ around the vulnerable life.
Cosmic totality (Agni, Sūrya, Candramas, Bhūmi, Āpaḥ, Dyauḥ, Antarikṣa, Diśaḥ, Ṛtavaḥ)
Elements govern embodiment; directions govern spatial safety; seasons govern temporal rhythm—together forming ṛta’s protective architecture.
Restores rhythmic order (sleep, appetite, recovery cycles) by invoking seasonal accord; waters and celestial bodies imply cooling/renewal.
Creates a full enclosure (all directions) and a time-aligned safeguard (seasons), guiding the patient through danger.
4 pādas with expansive listing; cadence driven by accumulation of cosmic nouns
Enumerative lists often stretch pādas; recitation may use micro-pauses after each cosmic member.
Processional, panoramic rhythm—like circling the world in speech.
Produces a sense of being surrounded and supported; ‘carried across’ through verbal mapping of totality.
Seat the patient facing an auspicious direction; establish a small protective boundary by marking/gesturing to the quarters while reciting the directional list.
Sprinkle water (āpaḥ) on the patient at the mention of waters, as a cleansing-healing act.
Apply a threefold protection (trivṛt): e.g., tie a triple cord/three-knotted thread or touch three times at vital points, synchronized with the word ‘trivṛtā’.
End with a ‘carrying across’ gesture: lead the patient a few steps forward or symbolically ‘pass’ them over a line/threshold to enact pārayantu.
Kauśika Sūtra: āyuṣya-protection rite with directional/seasonal invocations and threefold protective binding (edition-dependent numbering).
Atharvan healer-priest: performs spatial-temporal harmonization (quarters/seasons), administers water-sprinkling, and binds the threefold protection.
Recite while tying a three-stranded thread, or while giving/sprinkling water to a recovering person; can also be spoken at thresholds (doorway) for directional protection.
At sunrise/sunset (solar-lunar balance) or at season change; during recovery milestones.
Family elder/healer recites; may circumambulate the patient or the house to ‘activate’ directions.
Āyuṣya-protective applications.
Use as a protection prayer before travel, surgery, or during rehabilitation; pair with hydration and routine.
waters (āpaḥ) as healing medium; directions/quarters (disaḥ) as protective enclosure; seasons (ṛtavaḥ) as temporal regulators; trivṛt (threefold cord/structure/rite)
Trivṛt may imply a three-stranded cord/band used as a protective tie in āyuṣya rites (interpretive, consistent with Atharvanic practice).
Āpaḥ explicitly: can be used as mantra-charged water for sipping/sprinkling.
Agni included among the carriers; inner heat of recovery and digestion is implicitly invoked.
Waters cleanse and cool; earth grounds; sun/moon regulate cycles; directions form a protective ‘fence’; trivṛt is the minimal stable structure (three strands) that holds the person together.
General danger states: frailty, recovery crises, fear of relapse; protective crossing through illness.
Apotropaic enclosure (directions) + rhythmic regulation (seasons) + elemental stabilization (earth/waters/celestials).
Dinacaryā/ṛtucaryā (daily/seasonal regimen) resonance; balancing vāta through grounding (bhūmi) and hydration (āpaḥ).
Circadian/seasonal rhythm stabilization; grounding techniques for anxiety; environmental regulation supporting recovery.
Patient/reciter in a liminal or risky condition
To secure safe passage through danger by mobilizing the entire cosmos in ṛta-aligned accord, using a threefold support (trivṛt).
Totality-invocation + spatial enclosure (diśaḥ) + temporal attunement (ṛtavaḥ) + threefold binding (trivṛt).
Relapse, accidents, unseen harms, disorientation in time/space
Continuity of life, safe transitions, stable household rhythm
Enclosure and alignment: sense the body as located safely within space (directions) and time (seasons).
mūlādhāra (bhūmi/grounding) and anāhata (safe passage/holding field)
Box breathing (4-4-4-4) as a ‘trivṛt’ analogue (threefold support can be mapped to inhale-hold-exhale), done gently.
A mandala of eight directions around you; a season wheel overhead; waters flowing through the body carrying away fear; you are ferried across a river by cosmic forces.
Oriented, contained, and rhythmically regulated.
Practice during anxiety or recovery: recite once, then sit for 3 minutes sensing earth contact, breath rhythm, and the day’s light.
Enumerative chanting with clear segmenting; preserve accents on deity names where marked in transmission.
Place light pauses after each cosmic item (agniḥ | sūryaḥ | candramā | …); sustain the final ‘pārayantu’ as the crossing/closure.
Broad, spacious tone; avoid sharpness—aim for encompassing sound.
Three recitations match ‘trivṛtā’; can be paired with three knots in a thread or three sips of charged water.
3 times
Recovery from illness, anxiety episodes, travel protection, major transitions (new home, new job).
At dawn/sunset or before crossing thresholds (doorway, journey start); during seasonal change or when routines are disrupted.
Improved sense of safety and orientation; steadier rhythms; supportive mindset for healing.
If anxiety/illness is severe, use alongside professional care; do not rely on mantra alone for urgent conditions.
The verse is non-botanical; its ‘medicine’ is cosmological order. Waters function as the closest to a pharmacological medium, while the rest are macrocosmic stabilizers invoked to restore the patient’s alignment with regulated time (ṛtu/ṛta).
Health is framed as dependence on cosmic and ritual order administered by a specialist; the patient is ‘carried across’ by powers marshaled through priestly speech and controlled spatial actions (quarters, bindings).
The catalog of cosmic supports is RV-familiar, but the Atharvanic pragmatic closure ‘pārayantu’ (deliver me) and the technical ‘trivṛt’ as a protective device show applied-ritual orientation.
Gopatha frequently links efficacy to concord with ṛta and correct ritual ordering of space/time; this mantra explicitly states that the seasonal powers, ‘in concord with seasons,’ effect deliverance—an Atharvanic articulation of health as restored cosmic synchronization.
