ਵਸਿਸ਼ਠ ਦਾ ਇਹ ਸੰਖੇਪ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੁਭ ਭਜਨ ਦਿਵ੍ਯ ਆਪਹ (ਜਲਾਂ) ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ—ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਾਚੀਨ, ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਸ਼ੁੱਧ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੀਆਂ ਸ਼ਕਤੀਆਂ ਵਜੋਂ, ਜੋ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਹਿੰਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ; ਅਤੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਤੁਰੰਤ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਤੇ ਕਲਿਆਣ ਦੀ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਜਲਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਇੰਦਰ ਦੀ ਉਤਸ਼ਾਹ-ਪ੍ਰਦ ਸ਼ਕਤੀ ਨਾਲ ਅਤੇ ਵਰੁਣ ਦੀ ਸਤਿ–ਅਸਤਿ ਉੱਤੇ ਨੈਤਿਕ ਨਿਗਰਾਨੀ ਨਾਲ ਜੋੜਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਲਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਰੀਰਕ ਸ਼ੁੱਧਿਕਾਰਕਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਤ ਦੇ ਰਖਵਾਲਿਆਂ ਵਜੋਂ ਦਰਸਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਅੰਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਇਹ ਕਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਵਰੁਣ, ਸੋਮ, ਸਾਰੇ ਦੇਵਤੇ ਅਤੇ ਵੈਸ਼ਵਾਨਰ ਅਗਨੀ ਜਲਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਹੀ ਵੱਸਦੇ ਹਨ, ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਜਲਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਬ੍ਰਹਿਮੰਡਕ ਅਤੇ ਯਜ੍ਞਿਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਧਾਰਕ ਮਾਤ੍ਰਿਕਾ ਬਣਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

Mantra 1
समुद्रज्येष्ठाः सलिलस्य मध्यात्पुनाना यन्त्यनिविशमानाः । इन्द्रो या वज्री वृषभो रराद ता आपो देवीरिह मामवन्तु ॥
ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਜ੍ਯੇਸ਼ਠਾ, ਜਲ ਦੇ ਮੱਧ ਤੋਂ—ਪੁਨਾਨਾ (ਸ਼ੁੱਧ ਹੁੰਦੀਆਂ)—ਕਿਸੇ ਥਾਂ ਟਿਕੇ ਬਿਨਾਂ ਅੱਗੇ ਵਧਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ। ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਜਲਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵਜ੍ਰਧਾਰੀ, ਵ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਭ ਇੰਦਰ ਨੇ ਗੂੰਜਾਇਆ—ਉਹ ਦਿਵ੍ਯ ਆਪਃ ਇੱਥੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਕਰਨ।

या आपो दिव्या उत वा स्रवन्ति खनित्रिमा उत वा याः स्वयंजाः । समुद्रार्था याः शुचयः पावकास्ता आपो देवीरिह मामवन्तु ॥
ਜਿਹੜੀਆਂ ਆਪಃ (ਜਲ) ਦਿਵ੍ਯ ਹਨ ਜਾਂ ਵਹਿੰਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ; ਜਾਂ ਕੂਆਂ/ਖੂਹ ਤੋਂ ਖੋਦ ਕੇ ਕੱਢੀਆਂ ਗਈਆਂ ਹਨ; ਜਾਂ ਸਵਯੰ-ਜਨਮੀਆਂ ਹਨ; ਜੋ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਵੱਲ ਜਾਂਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ—ਉਹ ਚਮਕਦਾਰ, ਪਾਵਕ, ਸ਼ੁਚਿ ਜਲ-ਦੇਵੀਆਂ ਇੱਥੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਕਰਨ।

यासां राजा वरुणो याति मध्ये सत्यानृते अवपश्यञ्जनानाम् । मधुश्चुतः शुचयो याः पावकास्ता आपो देवीरिह मामवन्तु ॥
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਜਲਾਂ ਦੇ ਵਿਚਕਾਰ ਰਾਜਾ ਵਰੁਣ ਚਲਦਾ ਹੈ, ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਸੱਚ ਅਤੇ ਝੂਠ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖਦਾ ਹੋਇਆ—ਮਧੁ ਟਪਕਾਉਣ ਵਾਲੀਆਂ, ਸ਼ੁਚਿ, ਪਾਵਕ, ਚਮਕਦਾਰ ਉਹ ਜਲ-ਦੇਵੀਆਂ ਇੱਥੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਕਰਨ।

यासु राजा वरुणो यासु सोमो विश्वे देवा यासूर्जं मदन्ति । वैश्वानरो यास्वग्निः प्रविष्टस्ता आपो देवीरिह मामवन्तु ॥
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਜਲਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਰਾਜਾ ਵਰੁਣ ਅਧਿਪਤੀ ਹੈ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਸੋਮ ਵਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਭ ਦੇਵ ਊਰਜਾ ਦੇ ਵਾਧੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਮਗਨ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ; ਅਤੇ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਵੈਸ਼ਵਾਨਰ ਅਗਨੀ ਪ੍ਰਵਿਸ਼ਟ ਹੈ—ਉਹ ਜਲ-ਦੇਵੀਆਂ ਇੱਥੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਕਰਨ।
Frequently Asked Questions
It is a short hymn to the divine Waters (Āpaḥ), praising their power to purify and asking them to protect the worshipper. It also links the waters with Varuṇa’s moral order and with Soma and Agni.
Because Varuṇa is the guardian of ṛta (right order). The hymn says he moves within the waters, watching truth and falsehood, so water becomes a symbol of both physical cleansing and ethical clarity.
It is commonly suited to simple purification acts like sipping or sprinkling water before prayer or ritual. Reciting the hymn with clean water and the refrain asking protection is the basic, traditional application.
