Sukta 34

Sukta 9.34

Devata

Soma Pavamāna (Indu, the purified Soma)

Inside Sukta 34

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

Soma is pressed forth and begins to stream in an unbroken current, propelled onward with inherent force.

  2. Development

His rushing purification is described as a power that breaks rigid resistances; the rite is framed as both cleansing and empowerment.

  3. Climax

Soma becomes Trita’s purifier and Indra’s exhilaration—taking on ‘forms’ for divine work and inner energizing.

  4. Where it settles

The hymn ends by identifying the ceaseless flow of hymns themselves toward Soma, like a lowing milk-cow of inspiration that awakens hearing and receptivity.

The deity: Soma Pavamāna

  • In the VedaIndu is the pressed and purified Soma who runs as a bright, tawny stream through the filter, invigorating gods and seers; he is ‘anointed with forms’ and becomes a purifier and an exhilarant. He is portrayed as forceful, rushing, and world-clearing—able to shatter what is rigid and obstructive.
  • Cosmic functionMediator of vitality between heaven and earth: the sacrificial essence that strengthens Indra and the gods, renews cosmic order through purification, and carries offerings and praise into effective power.
  • Inner significanceThe clarified current of consciousness: purification of mind and speech, a surge of courage and clarity that breaks inner inertia, and the awakening of inspired utterance (Vāc-like flow) from within.

The seer

  • Anonymous (traditionally: Pavamāna Soma hymnist)Voicing the Soma-pressing and purification mystique where the physical flow of Soma mirrors the flow of inspired speech (giraḥ) and awakened power (ojas).
