मन्थराप्रवेशः · Manthara Observes Ayodhya and Incites Kaikeyi
Setting: Ayodhyā (Kaikeyī’s inner apartments)
At these harsh words of the furious, evil-eyed hunchback Kaikeyi fell into great despondency.
Harsh, crooked speech can overturn a stable mind; guarding the mind is part of dharma.
Practice of mauna/śānta-vāk and mindfulness: observe how words trigger viṣāda; cultivate sattva.
Crooked counsel (kuṭila-buddhi) veils discrimination (viveka), plunging the mind into tamas-like viṣāda.
Mind’s fall under tamas/avidyā—loss of inner light (cf. ‘tamaso mā jyotir gamaya’ sentiment).
Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa 2.7: Mantharā’s incitement and Kaikeyī’s psychological turn; Mahābhārata: Duryodhana’s viṣāda after provocations (envy-to-despair arc)
Dharmaśāstra warnings on harsh speech (pāruṣya) as a source of sin
Ayodhyākāṇḍa: Kaikeyī’s later hardening from viṣāda to resolve in demanding boons
Anuṣṭup (śloka)
Grieving
Manda (low, heavy) cadence emphasizing ‘viṣādam agamat param’
It highlights the dharmic importance of right speech: cruel or manipulative words can unseat another’s mental balance, leading them away from righteous decision-making.
Mantharā’s verbal attack successfully unsettles Kaikeyī, plunging her into anxiety and sorrow.
The need for emotional steadiness and discernment; Kaikeyī’s vulnerability to despair becomes the opening for further manipulation.
