tváṃ ha tyád indra kútsam āvā́ḥ śuśrū́ṣamāṇas tanvā̀ samaryé | dā́sáṃ yác chuṣṇáṃ kúyavaṃ ny àsmai árandhaya ārjuneyā́ya śíkṣan ||
Indra protected Kutsā who served him fully in battle; Indra brought down the Dāsa Śuṣṇa the deceiver, subduing him for Arjuneya, teaching him the skill of victory.
Kutsā is the aspiring soul-force that ‘serves’ (śuśrūṣamāṇa) with the whole being (tanvā) in the inner conflict. Śuṣṇa the ‘drying’ deceiver symbolizes a withering, false force—sterile mental-vital suggestion that parches inspiration and joy. Indra subdues this deception and teaches the ‘Arjuneya’ (the will-to-win, arjuna = bright/white) the right method: victory comes by luminous intelligence allied to total sincerity, not by mere aggression.
Wholehearted aspiration attracts a higher guidance that defeats inner deception and trains the will in true mastery.
Indra aids the servant, subduing Śuṣṇa, victory as taught skill, inner battle
Vasiṣṭha hymns frequently recall Indra’s aid to chosen heroes as types of the soul aided by the gods in the inner conquest.
The seer frames historical-like victories as perennial inner pedagogy: illumination not only saves, it trains the will in the art of conquering falsehood.
Champion who breaks hostile powers and restores the flow of light and waters; defender of the truthful.
Discriminating luminous force that exposes deception, restores inner ‘moisture’ (joy/energy), and instructs the will in right victory.
Indra praise in Soma rites; recitation for protection in contests and for removing hostile influences.

4×11 syllables (approx.)
Narrative vigor; alternating lift (aid) and strike (subduing).
Builds confidence through remembrance of inner victories; stimulates alertness against deceptive movements.
Recited to invoke Indra’s protective aid for the disciplined sacrificer and to overcome ‘drying’ obstruction (Śuṣṇa) during the Soma struggle.
During stotras/shastras addressed to Indra; also suitable as protective prayer when facing opposition.
Invoke Indra’s guardianship and his power to subdue hostile forces.
Use when facing ‘dryness’ (burnout, cynicism): chant to call back clarity and train the will to act from truth.
√av ‘to aid’ (Avestan av- ‘help’ cognate). śuśrūṣ- intensive/desiderative of √śru ‘hear’ → ‘eager to listen/serve’. √randh ‘to subject’ has Indo-Iranian parallels (Avestan rənd- ‘to hinder/obstruct’ in semantic neighborhood), supporting the contest vocabulary. Śuṣṇa relates to √śuṣ ‘to dry’—aridity as symbol of lifeless obstruction.
śuśrūṣā (attentive obedience/listening as inner discipline), overcoming deception (kuyava vs ṛta), divine pedagogy (śikṣan: Indra teaches victory)
Right victory is victory of ṛta over deceit (kuyava).
Exposure of falsehood (druḥ) and restoration of truth-seeing.
Releasing the currents of life and inspiration from parching obstruction.
Integral-psychological reading: demons as formations of consciousness; Indra as illumined mind.
dry season imagery (symbolic)
Drying demon = loss of rasa/joy; storm-force = influx of higher energy that rehydrates the psyche with inspiration.
Detect and name the ‘kuyava’ voice (deceptive suggestion). Offer it to Indra’s light; choose one truthful action.
maṇipūra (victory-will) with support from ājñā (discernment)
Brisk-energetic ujjāyī for 12 breaths, then chant once; pause, feel the ‘dryness’ dissolve on inhale.
From fatigued aridity to energized lucidity; sharpened discrimination.
Before chanting, recall a moment of inner dryness or self-deception. During ‘śuśrūṣamāṇas tanvā’, feel total sincerity. On ‘ni… arandhaya’, visualize the deceptive formation collapsing.
Triṣṭubh with clear udātta on names and decisive verbs (āvaḥ, arandhaya). Maintain svarita glide after udātta per tradition.
Make ‘tvaṃ ha tyad indra’ a strong opening; keep ‘śuśrūṣamāṇas tanvā’ softer and sincere; strike on ‘ni… arandhaya’.
kutsam: dental ts cluster clean, śuśrūṣamāṇaḥ: ś palatal; long ū and ā, tanvā: nasal n; long ā, chuṣṇaṃ: aspirated ch; retroflex ṣ, kuyavaṃ: keep y clear, ārjuneyāya: long ā; j soft palatal, śikṣan: retroflex ṣ; short a at end
Bright, cutting, with a teaching-cadence at the end; avoid harshness—clarity over aggression.
