Inside Sukta 174

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

Indra is invoked as king among the gods and asked to protect the human powers within the worshippers and guard them as lordly might (1.174.1).

  2. Development

Praise expands into Indra’s functions: true lordship, bounty, deliverance across hazards, and the defeat of ungiving foes; the hymn also gestures to social-cosmic order through Mitra/Aryaman companionship and the carrying forward of progeny/continuity (1.174.6).

  3. Climax

Indra’s protective supremacy is crystallized as the ‘most wolf-proof’ guardian and protector of the human king-force, enabling victory over all rivalries and the gaining of driving abundance (1.174.10).

  4. Where it settles

The hymn ends in a confident, practical request: may Indra’s might allow the worshippers to know, win, and carry home plenitude and swift bounty, secured by his guardianship.

The deity: Indra

  • In the VedaIndra is hailed as rājā (king) with the gods, a victorious wielder of force who protects men, breaks hostile powers, and rewards the generous; he is invoked as Asura in the older Vedic sense of ‘lord of conscious might.’
  • Cosmic functionHe upholds the world-order by overcoming obstructive forces, releasing power and abundance, and securing victory and safe passage for the clan and its kingly leadership (nṛpātā).
  • Inner significanceIndra represents awakened will and courageous clarity that defeats inner ‘ungiving’ tendencies—fear, inertia, and miserliness—so that right action, continuity of works (apatya), and abundance can manifest.

The seer

  • Agastya MānaĀgastya (Agastya-gotra; traditional attribution in several Anukramaṇī lists, with some variation across recensions) · A foremost seer associated with the Agastya cycle and with hymns that combine martial Indra-praise with ethical-protective petitions for the community’s vitality and right order.

Frequently Asked Questions

It asks Indra to protect the worshippers’ human strength and community, defeat hostile and ungenerous forces, and grant victory, safety, and abundant power (iṣ and wealth).

The word means “most wolf-proof,” a vivid way of calling Indra the strongest guardian against predators—both literal dangers and any threatening forces that attack the community.
