Inside Sukta 9

How it unfolds

  1. How it opens

Begins by declaring and installing śānti across heaven, earth, and the wide mid-air, extending peace to waters and herbs (region-by-region pacification).

  2. What it asks

That Mitra–Varuṇa, the Sun (Vivasvant), Death-as-boundary (Antaka), and all portents and grahas—terrestrial, atmospheric, and celestial—become ‘weal’ to us and cease to harm.

  3. Where its power lies

The hymn asserts efficacy through totalizing enumeration (all worlds, all supports, all gods) and performative repetition—“śāntiḥ… śāntiḥ… śāntiḥ”—as a verbal act that settles and transforms negativity.

  4. How it closes

Ends with an all-peaces formula that explicitly pacifies whatever is dreadful/cruel/evil ‘here’, converting it into śānta and śiva, and sealing welfare for ‘us’.

Kind of hymn

Śānti / Apotropaic (Utpāta-graha-nivāraṇa)

What it is for

Quelling of ominous signs and hostile influences; establishment of universal peace so that the environment, deities, and natural supports cooperate in protection and welfare.

Who it is for

Householders, village/community officiants, and Atharvanic practitioners performing protective rites during fear of omens, epidemics of misfortune, or unsettling celestial/atmospheric signs.

Also used as

  • Apotropaic (rakṣoghna/graha-nivāraṇa)
  • Cosmological śānti (three-world pacification)
  • Bhaisajya-adjacent (waters/herbs as peaceful supports)

The deity

The hymn treats “peace” (śānti) as an effective, pervasive power that can settle the three worlds and all living supports (waters, herbs, trees). It also invokes Mitra–Varuṇa as guardians of order, Vivasvant (Sun) as cosmic regulator, and Antaka (Death) as the terminus of harm—while naming utpāta and graha as disruptive agencies that must be rendered benign.

Powers of the deity

  • Pacifies calamity-signs and reverses ill-omens
  • Stabilizes ṛta/social-cosmic order through Mitra–Varuṇa
  • Neutralizes ग्रह (seizing afflictions) moving in sky/air/earth
  • Transforms ghorá/krūra/pāpa influences into śiva (gracious, auspicious)
  • Sanctifies environment via waters, herbs, and forest-trees as supports of welfare

Why the deity is called

To secure collective well-being by calming the cosmos and specifically disarming portents and seizing forces, so that all surrounding powers become “weal” (śaṃ) to the reciter and their people.

The seer

  • Atharvanic śānti-tradition (anonymous/variable attribution)Atharvan. Śāntika and apotropaic charms: pacification of portents, ग्रह-nivāraṇa, and establishment of cosmic/household calm through region-by-region invocations of peace.

Other hymns of this seer

  • AV 19.8 (śānti/pacification cluster, closely allied in tone)
  • AV 6.20 (general śānti formula traditions; related peace-invocations)
  • AV 7.53 (apotropaic calming of dangers; thematic parallels)

Preparing for the rite

  • Select a clean, quiet place (household threshold, courtyard, or ritual ground).
  • Perform simple purification: sipping or sprinkling water; mental resolve for śānti.
  • If desired, place a vessel of clean water and a small bundle of medicinal herbs/green twigs as witnesses of pacification.

The rite

  • Recite the opening śānti installation over the regions (earth–mid-air–heaven) while facing east or toward the open sky.
  • Name the specific agencies (Mitra, Varuṇa, Vivasvant, Antaka; utpāta; graha) and verbally convert them into “weal” (śaṃ).
  • Conclude with the comprehensive śānti litany, repeating “śāntiḥ” as a sealing refrain and explicitly pacifying whatever is dreadful/cruel/evil ‘here’.
  • Optionally sprinkle water in the four directions and over the head/doorway to externalize the pacification.

What it needs

  • Clean water (āpaḥ) for sprinkling/sipping
  • Herbs (oṣadhayaḥ) or a simple green twig/leaf bundle
  • Optional: a small wood/branch token (vanaspati) as a protective emblem

When

Performed when ominous portents are observed (unusual celestial/atmospheric events, disturbing dreams/signs) or as a general śānti at dawn/twilight.

The main substance

Water (āpaḥ) for śānti-sprinkling and purification

Herbs

  • Generic oṣadhayaḥ (medicinal herbs as a class; local protective greens may be used)

Amulets

  • Optional herb-bundle or green twig tied as a simple protective token (not required by the hymn text)

How it is prepared

Keep clean water in a vessel; lightly infuse with a few fresh herbs/greens if available, then sprinkle during recitation to ‘externalize’ the śānti installation.

Frequently Asked Questions

It is used to calm and neutralize ominous signs (utpāta) and harmful seizing influences (graha), establishing peace across the environment and the community.

Mitra–Varuṇa represent cosmic order and moral regulation, and Vivasvant (the Sun) represents stabilizing light and rhythm; invoking them supports the restoration of balance when portents threaten it.

No special items are required by the verses themselves, but clean water and a few herbs/greens are traditionally compatible supports for śānti—used for simple sprinkling and purification during recitation.
