Inside Sukta 23

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

A direct, urgent invitation: potent Soma is ready—Vāyu is called to come and drink what has been set forth.

  2. Development

The hymn sustains the sacrificial immediacy (arrival, seating, drinking) while extending the field of aid—guidance, safe passage, recovery, and support—through associated divine powers.

  3. Climax

The prayer turns from offering to transformation: the sacrificer seeks wholeness—radiant force, increase, and full life—ratified by the gods and Indra with the seers.

  4. Where it settles

A sealing of intention: the rite’s fruit is affirmed as a divinely witnessed integration of vitality (Vāyu), guidance (Pūṣan), and consecrating fire-power (Agni).

The deity: Vāyu

  • In the VedaVāyu is praised as the swift, life-giving Wind who arrives first to the Soma offering, invited to drink the pressed draughts placed in order on the barhis. He is often paired with Indra in early Soma rounds, yet here receives a direct, intimate call to approach and partake.
  • Cosmic functionAnimator of the worlds through breath and motion; mover of clouds and currents; carrier of vitality that enables speech, strength, and the efficacy of sacrifice.
  • Inner significanceThe awakened prāṇa—clarity, momentum, and inner drive that receives the ‘Soma’ (luminous delight/energy) and distributes it through the being, stabilizing attention and powering aspiration.

The seer

  • Medhātithi KāṇvaKāṇva (Kanva-gotra) · A prominent early Kāṇva seer associated with Soma-invitation and praise-hymns in Maṇḍala 1, noted for concise, forceful Gāyatrī-addresses that foreground the ritual moment of offering and the deity’s immediate arrival.

  • Traditionally associated with multiple Kāṇva hymns in Rigveda Maṇḍala 1 (especially Soma and deity-invocation sūktas)
  • Linked in later tradition with the Kāṇva seer milieu that preserves and transmits early Soma-liturgical language

The rite, step by step

  • Prepare the vedi and spread the barhis (ritual grass) as the deity’s seat.
  • Press Soma (suta), strain and set out the draughts in proper order (prasthita).
  • Recite the Gāyatrī invitations calling Vāyu to ‘come’ (ā gahi) and ‘drink’ (piba).
  • Offer the Soma with accompanying oblations and confirmations by allied deities as the hymn’s scope widens.
  • Conclude with integrative blessing-prayers for varcas (radiance), prajā (increase/progeny), and āyus (long life), seeking divine acknowledgement/witness.
  • Proceed to subsequent savana sequences where Indra and others receive their portions.

Offerings

  • Soma juice (pressed and set forth)
  • Ghee/clarified butter (as ancillary oblation)
  • Barhis (grass seat) and ritual hospitality (upacāra)

Frequently Asked Questions

It is primarily a Soma-invitation hymn calling Vāyu to come quickly and drink the freshly pressed Soma set out for the morning offering, then it broadens into prayers for guidance and well-being.

In many Vedic Soma sequences, Vāyu is approached early because wind/breath represents immediate life-force and swift arrival; his receiving the Soma symbolizes vital energy being awakened and set in right motion.

Vedic hymns often widen from the main deity to allied powers needed for the rite’s success: Pūṣan for guidance and restoration, and Agni for consecration and for sealing the sacrifice with blessings like radiance, increase, and long life.
