Adhyaya 49: The Padmanābha Dvādaśī Observance, with the Eulogy of Lamp-Offering Merit

Padmanābha-dvādaśī-vrataḥ (Dīpa-dāna-māhātmya-sahitaḥ)

Ritual-Manual and Ethical-Discourse (Bhakti-based ritual merit across social strata)

Framed within the Varāha–Pṛthivī instructional setting, the text presents Durvāsas relaying a vrata for Aśvayuja śukla-dvādaśī: worship of the eternal Padmanābha with limb-specific offerings, installation of a pot and a golden image, and subsequent gifting to a brāhmaṇa at dawn. To demonstrate the rite’s efficacy, a narrative is introduced: King Bhadrāśva hosts Agastya for seven nights. Observing the queen Kāntimatī’s exceptional radiance and the deference of co-wives, Agastya repeatedly praises diverse social groups and exemplars (including Prahlāda and Dhruva), then explains the cause—past-life merit from lighting even another’s lamp in Hari’s shrine. The chapter generalizes merit across yugas, emphasizing minimal acts of devotion as socially inclusive ethical instruction and as a model of sustaining sacred order tied to Pṛthivī’s well-being.

What happens

  1. How it opens

Within the Varāha-Pṛthivī upadeśa frame, Durvāsas introduces a time-bound vrata for Āśvina/Aśvayuja śukla-dvādaśī, presenting Padmanābha worship as a stabilizing dharmic practice whose efficacy is demonstrable through narrative exemplum rather than abstract doctrine.

  2. Stories within

Agastya’s seven-night stay with King Bhadrāśva and the observation of Queen Kāntimatī’s exceptional radiance; Past-life causation narrative explaining Kāntimatī’s splendor through the merit of lighting another’s lamp in Hari’s shrine; Exemplary name-checking of Prahlāda and Dhruva as paradigms of exclusive devotion; Cross-status merit illustrations involving a vaiśya household in Vaidīśa (Haridatta) and a śūdra artisan/servant (as prior-life identities)

  3. The turning point

Durvāsas details the Padmanābha Dvādaśī observance: limb-oriented worship of the eternal Padmanābha, kalaśa/ghaṭa installation with a golden image, night-long devotion, and dawn-time gifting to a brāhmaṇa; to validate the rite’s power, the text shifts to King Bhadrāśva hosting Agastya for seven nights, where the queen Kāntimatī’s extraordinary radiance becomes the interpretive puzzle.

  4. How it ends

Agastya, after praising a wide range of social groups and devotional exemplars (notably Prahlāda and Dhruva), reveals the causal key: Kāntimatī’s splendor and social honor arise from a prior-life, seemingly minor act, lighting even another person’s lamp in Hari’s shrine (pārakya-dīpa). The chapter universalizes this logic across yugas, arguing that minimal, accessible bhakti acts can yield disproportionate merit and social uplift.

Tirtha focus

  • Pilgrimage MeritPuṣkara functions as a sanctified destination in Agastya’s itinerary, while the chapter’s main ‘tīrtha-merit’ is portable: temple lamp-offering to Hari/Padmanābha—especially kindling an already-placed lamp—yields tīrtha-like puṇya without requiring wealth or long travel.

Ritual instructions

  • Primary RitualPadmanābha Dvādaśī vrata (Āśvina/Aśvayuja śukla-dvādaśī) with Padmanābha arcana, kalaśa-sthāpana, sauvarṇa-pratimā-vinyāsa, and dawn dāna; supplemented by dīpa-dāna/pārakya-dīpa in Hari’s shrine.
  • BenefitProduces enduring puṇya expressed as radiance/tejas and śrī (prosperity), social honor and harmony, and strong bhakti credentials across social strata; in Kali-yuga especially, small acts (lamp-lighting) are framed as sufficient to generate great merit and uphold dharma.

The narrative frame

  • Dialogue ToneInstructional and justificatory: ritual manual (vidhi) is reinforced by itihāsa-style proof, with a didactic, socially inclusive moral emphasis

Closing phalashruti

A phala-logic is implied rather than a single formulaic phalaśruti: Padmanābha Dvādaśī and dīpa-dāna confer enduring puṇya, radiance/śrī, social esteem, and dharmic continuity across varṇa and gender, with special emphasis on Kali-yuga accessibility.

The emotional journey

  • Dominant RasaŚānta (devotional serenity) with strong Adbhuta (wonder) at the visible fruit of subtle merit
  • Emotional ProgressionBegins in calm instruction (vrata-vidhi), rises into curiosity and wonder through Kāntimatī’s radiance and social deference, peaks in revelatory amazement when Agastya discloses the tiny causal act (pārakya-dīpa), and settles into a reassuring ethical universalism that devotion is accessible and socially harmonizing.

Planning a pilgrimage

  • Visit FeasibilityHigh for Puṣkara (well-connected pilgrimage town); Vidishā is also easily reachable as a historical region reference. The chapter’s core practice (dīpa-dāna) is feasible anywhere with a Viṣṇu/Padmanābha temple or home shrine, aligning with the text’s portability ethic.
  • Best SeasonĀśvina (Sep–Oct) for observing śukla-dvādaśī; Puṣkara is most comfortable and active for pilgrims in Oct–Mar.
  • Modern Location NamePuṣkar (near Ajmer, Rajasthan) and Vidisha (Madhya Pradesh)
  • Related FestivalViṣṇu-related Dvādaśīs in Āśvina (often aligned with broader Viṣṇu-pūjā calendars); locally, Puṣkara’s major public draw is Kārttika season and the Puṣkara fair period (contextual travel pairing rather than text-specific).

Frequently Asked Questions

The text advances an ethics of accessible devotion: small, materially modest acts (notably dīpa-jvālana before Hari/Padmanābha) are presented as producing significant moral and social outcomes, cutting across varṇa and gender categories. It also models a pedagogy where ritual practice is justified through narrative proof (itihāsa-style exemplum) rather than abstract argument.

The rite is assigned to Aśvayuja (Āśvina) month on śukla-pakṣa dvādaśī. The procedure includes night-to-dawn sequencing (śarvarī/prabhāta), with gifting to a brāhmaṇa specified at dawn. The chapter also compares efficacy across yugas: Kṛta, Tretā, Dvāpara, and Kali.

While not explicitly ecological in imagery, the chapter frames ritual light, orderly observance, and disciplined giving as practices that sustain dharma—an implied mechanism for maintaining societal stability that, in the Varāha–Pṛthivī frame, supports Pṛthivī’s equilibrium. The emphasis on minimal-resource devotion (a single lamp) can be read as a low-impact, widely adoptable stewardship ethic.

Sage Agastya is central as the interpreting authority, and King Bhadrāśva anchors the royal setting (with a regional eponym 'Bhadrāśva-varṣa' noted). Prahlāda and Dhruva are cited as paradigmatic devotees. A mercantile household in Vaidīśa (a vaiśya named Haridatta) and a śūdra artisan/servant appear as prior-life identities illustrating cross-status religious merit.
