Mitra-Varuṇa

This short hymn praises Mitra and Varuṇa as the great sovereigns (mahi-kṣatrau) who uphold ṛta, the vast cosmic Truth-Order. It asks them to empower the worshippers with both earthly and heavenly abundance, and portrays their workings through rain, flowing waters, and nourishment that create a “vast foundation” for plenitude.

Mantra 1
प्र वो मित्राय गायत वरुणाय विपा गिरा । महिक्षत्रावृतं बृहत् ॥
मित्र और वरुण के लिए गाओ, अच्छे से समझ के बोलो। इनकी बहुत बड़ी ताकत है और यह बड़े सत्य को स्थिर रखते हैं।

सम्राजा या घृतयोनी मित्रश्चोभा वरुणश्च । देवा देवेषु प्रशस्ता ॥
मित्र और वरुण दोनों मिलके राज करते हैं। इनकी उत्पत्ति तेज चमक से हुई है। यह दोनों देवता हैं और देवियों के बीच सबसे ज़्यादा तारीफ होते हैं। इनमें राज की ताकत है।

ता नः शक्तं पार्थिवस्य महो रायो दिव्यस्य । महि वां क्षत्रं देवेषु ॥
इन दोनों की यह दुआ है कि हमें ज़मीन और आसमान की बड़ी दौलत मिल जाए। देवियों में इनकी राज की ताकत बड़ी है। यह ताकत हम में भी आए और हम स्ट्रॉन्ग बनें।

ऋतमृतेन सपन्तेषिरं दक्षमाशाते । अद्रुहा देवौ वर्धेते ॥
यह दोनों सच के साथ सच को पाते हैं। इनकी समझ तेज है और काम में दम है। यह देवता धोखा नहीं देते। यह हमारे अंदर हमेशा बढ़ते रहते हैं।

वृष्टिद्यावा रीत्यापेषस्पती दानुमत्याः । बृहन्तं गर्तमाशाते ॥
यह दोनों बारिश के आसमान और बहते पानी के स्वामी हैं। यह खाने-पीने की चीज़ें देते हैं। इनके पास बड़ी दौलत है। यह हमें गहरा आधार देते हैं जहाँ सब कुछ संभाल के रखा जा सके।
