Mitra-Varuṇa

This short hymn praises Mitra and Varuṇa as the great sovereigns (mahi-kṣatrau) who uphold ṛta, the vast cosmic Truth-Order. It asks them to empower the worshippers with both earthly and heavenly abundance, and portrays their workings through rain, flowing waters, and nourishment that create a “vast foundation” for plenitude.
Mantra 1
प्र वो मित्राय गायत वरुणाय विपा गिरा । महिक्षत्रावृतं बृहत् ॥
Sing forth to Mitra, to Varuṇa, with a discerning utterance. Great in sovereignty are they; they establish the Vast Truth-Order.
Mantra 2
सम्राजा या घृतयोनी मित्रश्चोभा वरुणश्च । देवा देवेषु प्रशस्ता ॥
These two are co-kings, whose womb is the clarified light (ghṛta); Mitra and Varuṇa together—gods praised among the gods, powers of luminous sovereignty.
Mantra 3
ता नः शक्तं पार्थिवस्य महो रायो दिव्यस्य । महि वां क्षत्रं देवेषु ॥
May those two make us capable of the great earthly and the heavenly plenitude. Great is your sovereign power among the gods—may it act in us as strength and mastery.
Mantra 4
ऋतमृतेन सपन्तेषिरं दक्षमाशाते । अद्रुहा देवौ वर्धेते ॥
They win the Truth by the Truth; together they attain the swift, keen discernment and the effective power of ordering. Undeceiving, the two gods grow—strengthening the law within us.
Mantra 5
वृष्टिद्यावा रीत्यापेषस्पती दानुमत्याः । बृहन्तं गर्तमाशाते ॥
Heaven of rain and waters of flowing, the two lords of nourishment, rich in abundance: they attain the vast depth—opening in us a great foundation where the plenitudes can be held.
They are paired Āditya deities: Mitra represents harmony and right relationship, and Varuṇa represents moral-cosmic sovereignty. Together they uphold ṛta, the universal order of truth.
It means “the Vast ṛta”—the great Truth-Order that sustains the cosmos and society. The hymn says Mitra-Varuṇa establish and protect this order.
The hymn asks Mitra-Varuṇa to grant inner capability and strength, and to bestow both earthly and heavenly abundance, symbolized through rain, waters, and nourishment.
