Outer meaning

Agni moves as the inward messenger between heaven and earth; the invoker seated within man as the guiding priest. He adorns the vast home with luminous powers; impelled by the gods, he is rich in inspired thought.

Inner meaning

The ‘inward messenger’ is the connecting flame that carries movements from the human to the divine and returns inspirations from the divine to the human. As purohita, Agni is placed ‘in front’ of our nature—leading perception and action. The ‘vast home’ is the widened inner being (kṣaya bṛhat), which Agni beautifies with dyu-bhiḥ—luminous faculties (clarities, intuitions, illumined energies). ‘Impelled by the gods’ indicates that higher powers awaken this fire when we consent; then it becomes dhiyāvasu—rich in the treasure of inspired thought.

Universal truth

A true inner guide exists as a bridge between our ordinary mind and higher consciousness; when we give it precedence, the inner life becomes spacious and filled with luminous capacities.
