Sukta 10.7
Agni
A benediction: may Agni grant well-being from both heaven and earth and implant a universal, enduring life for sacrifice (RV 10.7.1).
The hymn turns to Agni as the constant house-priest who guards the home and makes the worshipper’s thoughts effective and victorious, aligned with ṛta (e.g., RV 10.7.4).
Agni is asked to become simultaneously helper and guardian, maker and holder of vitality—uniting protection, life-force, and successful offering in one divine agency (RV 10.7.7).
It ends with gifts of “havyadāti” (offering’s bounty) and a final plea for bodily protection and an unhindered course—life sustained without falling away from the path.
svasti no divo agne pṛthivyā
nityahotā
bhavā no agne 'vitota gopā
The hymn asks Agni for well-being from heaven and earth, long and universal life, clear discernment for right action, and strong protection for the worshipper’s vitality and body.
Agni is honored as the household fire and as the yajña-priest (hotṛ). The hymn treats daily life and ritual as one continuum: protected home, effective thought, and successful offering support each other.
It can be recited when lighting a lamp or fire for worship, at the start of a homa, or as a general prayer for clarity, health, and protection—especially at dawn or dusk.
