Soma-Pavamāna tradition (Book 9).
Soma Pavamāna.

This Soma Pavamāna hymn praises the purified Soma as he is cleansed, pressed, and poured with milk into the vessel, where he becomes a radiant, inspiring power. Soma is celebrated as the awakener of speech and thought, the renewer of life in the seat of Ṛta (cosmic order), and the giver of abundant wealth and well-being to the worshipper.
Mantra 1
हरिं मृजन्त्यरुषो न युज्यते सं धेनुभिः कलशे सोमो अज्यते । उद्वाचमीरयति हिन्वते मती पुरुष्टुतस्य कति चित्परिप्रियः ॥
They cleanse the tawny one; like a red-gold steed he is yoked to the work. With the milk-streams he is poured into the jar; Soma is anointed into his vessel of becoming. He lifts up the word and sets the thought in motion; to the much-praised, he becomes in many ways the intimate beloved.
Mantra 2
साकं वदन्ति बहवो मनीषिण इन्द्रस्य सोमं जठरे यदादुहुः । यदी मृजन्ति सुगभस्तयो नरः सनीळाभिर्दशभिः काम्यं मधु ॥
Many seers speak together of the Soma of Indra when they have drawn it into the belly (the inner vessel). When the strong-handed men purify it with the ten sisters moving in one home, the desired honey of delight is formed and made ready for the soul’s enjoyment.
Mantra 3
अरममाणो अत्येति गा अभि सूर्यस्य प्रियं दुहितुस्तिरो रवम् । अन्वस्मै जोषमभरद्विनंगृसः सं द्वयीभिः स्वसृभिः क्षेति जामिभिः ॥
Unwearied, he passes beyond to the cows (the rays), toward the dear place of the Sun, beyond the cry of the milking Daughter. Following him, the bending-grasper brings him delight; and he dwells united with the two sister-powers, the kindred ones.
Mantra 4
नृधूतो अद्रिषुतो बर्हिषि प्रियः पतिर्गवां प्रदिव इन्दुॠत्वियः । पुरंधिवान्मनुषो यज्ञसाधनः शुचिर्धिया पवते सोम इन्द्र ते ॥
Purified by men and pressed by the stone, the beloved Indu flows upon the sacred seat; the lord of the rays of light, moving in the wide heaven, fit for the rite. Full of plenitude, serving the human being as the accomplisher of sacrifice, pure with the illumined thought, Soma streams for thee, O Indra.
Mantra 5
नृबाहुभ्यां चोदितो धारया सुतोऽनुष्वधं पवते सोम इन्द्र ते । आप्राः क्रतून्त्समजैरध्वरे मतीर्वेर्न द्रुषच्चम्वोरासदद्धरिः ॥
Impelled by the arms of men, expressed in the stream, Soma flows according to his own law of delight for thee, O Indra. Thou hast filled and yoked the powers of will in the sacrifice; like a bird to its resting-place, the tawny one has come to sit upon the bowls.
Mantra 6
अंशुं दुहन्ति स्तनयन्तमक्षितं कविं कवयोऽपसो मनीषिणः । समी गावो मतयो यन्ति संयत ऋतस्य योना सदने पुनर्भुवः ॥
They milk the bright beam, thundering and inexhaustible—the seers, skilled in works and rich in insight. Together the rays of light and the thought-movements go, held in harmony, to the womb of Truth, to the seat where the becoming is renewed.
Mantra 7
नाभा पृथिव्या धरुणो महो दिवोऽपामूर्मौ सिन्धुष्वन्तरुक्षितः । इन्द्रस्य वज्रो वृषभो विभूवसुः सोमो हृदे पवते चारु मत्सरः ॥
As the navel of earth, as the firm support of the great heaven, set within the wave of the waters, within the rivers—Soma is poured. Indra’s thunderbolt, the bull of force, wide in riches, the lovely ecstasy flows purified in the heart.
Mantra 8
स तू पवस्व परि पार्थिवं रजः स्तोत्रे शिक्षन्नाधून्वते च सुक्रतो । मा नो निर्भाग्वसुनः सादनस्पृशो रयिं पिशङ्गं बहुलं वसीमहि ॥
Do thou then flow, circling the earthly realm; instruct our hymn and the one who labours, O thou of good effective will. Do not cut us off from the treasure, thou who touchest the seats of abundance; may we possess the tawny, manifold plenitude of being.
Mantra 9
आ तू न इन्दो शतदात्वश्व्यं सहस्रदातु पशुमद्धिरण्यवत् । उप मास्व बृहती रेवतीरिषोऽधि स्तोत्रस्य पवमान नो गहि ॥
Come to us, O Indu, bringing hundreds of gifts—power of the steed—bringing thousands of gifts, rich in the herds and in the golden light. Bring near to us the vast and opulent impulsions; O Pavamāna, come to our hymn and take thy seat upon it.
It praises Soma as he is purified through the filter and poured into the vessel with milk, and it asks him to inspire the worshipper and grant abundance.
In Vedic symbolism, purified Soma is not only a ritual drink; he is also the power that awakens inspired speech (vāc) and sets the mind’s insight (matī) in motion.
It refers to the source or seat of cosmic truth and order (Ṛta), where life and right becoming are renewed; the hymn says Soma leads energies and thoughts toward that renewing center.
