Sukta 12

Mantra 1

सोमा असृग्रमिन्दवः सुता ऋतस्य सादने । इन्द्राय मधुमत्तमाः ॥

The Soma-drops have run forth, pressed out, into the seat of Ṛta; most honeyed in their delight they move towards Indra, to strengthen the illumined force in us.

Mantra 2

अभि विप्रा अनूषत गावो वत्सं न मातरः । इन्द्रं सोमस्य पीतये ॥

The inspired seers have cried out towards him; the rays of light gather as mothers about their calf—towards Indra, for the drinking of Soma, that the illumined force may be nourished in us.

Mantra 3

मदच्युत्क्षेति सादने सिन्धोरूर्मा विपश्चित् । सोमो गौरी अधि श्रितः ॥

Soma, dropping the ecstasy, dwells established in the seat; as the wave of the river, clear in discerning, he rests upon the shining ‘Gaurī’—the bright foundation of illumination in us.

Mantra 4

दिवो नाभा विचक्षणोऽव्यो वारे महीयते । सोमो यः सुक्रतुः कविः ॥

From the navel of heaven, the clear-seeing Soma is magnified in the wool-filter’s stream; he who is of right and luminous will, the seer-poet, grows great within us.

Mantra 5

यः सोमः कलशेष्वाँ अन्तः पवित्र आहितः । तमिन्दुः परि षस्वजे ॥

That Soma who is set within the jars, placed inwardly in the purifier—him the luminous Indu embraces all around, enclosing and perfecting the clarified essence in us.

Mantra 6

प्र वाचमिन्दुरिष्यति समुद्रस्याधि विष्टपि । जिन्वन्कोशं मधुश्चुतम् ॥

The luminous Indu sends forth the inspired Word from the seat above the ocean of being; he quickens the vessel, dripping with honeyed delight, so that speech and consciousness may become abundant.

Mantra 7

नित्यस्तोत्रो वनस्पतिर्धीनामन्तः सबर्दुघः । हिन्वानो मानुषा युगा ॥

Ever praised, the Lord of the wood (the pressed plant-power), within the thoughts a giver of rich yield, he drives on the human ages—impelling the long labour of mankind toward ripeness of consciousness.

Mantra 8

अभि प्रिया दिवस्पदा सोमो हिन्वानो अर्षति । विप्रस्य धारया कविः ॥

Soma, urged onward, streams toward the beloved stations of the luminous Heaven; the Seer moves in the inspired one by his current, bearing the clarity of vision.

Mantra 9

आ पवमान धारय रयिं सहस्रवर्चसम् । अस्मे इन्दो स्वाभुवम् ॥

O Pavamāna, bring and uphold for us the plenitude of being—richness with a thousand radiances; O Indu, make it well-born and self-sustaining within us.
