Sukta 25

Mantra 1

या त ऊतिरवमा या परमा या मध्यमेन्द्र शुष्मिन्नस्ति । ताभिरू षु वृत्रहत्येऽवीर्न एभिश्च वाजैर्महान्न उग्र ॥

Whatever your help is—lower, higher, or in the middle—O forceful Indra, by those do you carry us through the slaying of the Obstructor; and by these plenitudes of force make us great, O mighty one.

Mantra 2

आभिः स्पृधो मिथतीररिषण्यन्नमित्रस्य व्यथया मन्युमिन्द्र । आभिर्विश्वा अभियुजो विषूचीरार्याय विशोऽव तारीर्दासीः ॥

By these (powers) repel the rivalries that clash, O unassailable Indra; shatter the wrath of the hostile. By these overcome all adversarial onsets that strike from many directions; for the Arya-consciousness lead down the Dāsa-forces.

Mantra 3

इन्द्र जामय उत येऽजामयोऽर्वाचीनासो वनुषो युयुज्रे । त्वमेषां विथुरा शवांसि जहि वृष्ण्यानि कृणुही पराचः ॥

Indra, whether they are kin or not-kin, those who have yoked themselves against us and press from near—do you strike down their disruptive powers; make their violent strengths turn away.

Mantra 4

शूरो वा शूरं वनते शरीरैस्तनूरुचा तरुषि यत्कृण्वैते । तोके वा गोषु तनये यदप्सु वि क्रन्दसी उर्वरासु ब्रवैते ॥

A hero indeed wins a hero by the powers of the embodied being, when you accomplish the conquering work with the light of your own substance. Whether in the child, or in the herds of light, or in the offspring, or in the waters—your cry breaks forth; in the wide fields you make your proclamation.

Mantra 5

नहि त्वा शूरो न तुरो न धृष्णुर्न त्वा योधो मन्यमानो युयोध । इन्द्र नकिष्ट्वा प्रत्यस्त्येषां विश्वा जातान्यभ्यसि तानि ॥

No hero, no swift one, no bold fighter—none who thinks himself a warrior—has ever fought you down. Indra, no one stands against you among them; you overtop all that is born.

Mantra 6

स पत्यत उभयोर्नृम्णमयोर्यदी वेधसः समिथे हवन्ते । वृत्रे वा महो नृवति क्षये वा व्यचस्वन्ता यदि वितन्तसैते ॥

He becomes lord of the human might of both sides when the wise-callers invoke him in the battle. Whether against Vṛtra or for a great increase in a man-filled home, when the expansive ones spread themselves out, he prevails.

Mantra 7

अध स्मा ते चर्षणयो यदेजानिन्द्र त्रातोत भवा वरूता । अस्माकासो ये नृतमासो अर्य इन्द्र सूरयो दधिरे पुरो नः ॥

Then indeed your peoples, when they are in movement, O Indra—be our rescuer and our enclosing guard. For those who are ours, the most manful and Arya, O Indra, the seer-heroes, have set you in front of us as our fortress.

Mantra 8

अनु ते दायि मह इन्द्रियाय सत्रा ते विश्वमनु वृत्रहत्ये । अनु क्षत्रमनु सहो यजत्रेन्द्र देवेभिरनु ते नृषह्ये ॥

In the wake of your giving moves the vast Indra-power; in your unbroken action all things follow you in the slaying of the Coverer. After you comes the true kingliness, after you the might—O Indra, worthy of sacrifice; with the gods they follow you in your man-conquering mastery.

Mantra 9

एवा नः स्पृधः समजा समत्स्विन्द्र रारन्धि मिथतीरदेवीः । विद्याम वस्तोरवसा गृणन्तो भरद्वाजा उत त इन्द्र नूनम् ॥

So do you drive our rival powers together and subdue them in the battles, O Indra—those false, un-godlike forces that confound. May we, the Bharadvājas, singing, come to know the Dawn’s wideness through your protection—yes, even now, O Indra.
