This hymn invokes Agni as the strongest and most desirable divine power among humans, urging the worshippers to unite their intention (iṣ) and praise (stoma) so the sacrifice is rightly directed. Agni is celebrated as the establisher of all, the bringer of sweetness and widening abundance, and the force by which hostile powers (dasyus) are overcome and true strengths are won.

Mantra 1

सखायः सं वः सम्यञ्चमिषं स्तोमं चाग्नये । वर्षिष्ठाय क्षितीनामूर्जो नप्त्रे सहस्वते ॥

O comrades, gather together your rightly-directed impulsion and your hymn for Agni, the most powerful among the dwellers, the offspring of the Force of plenitude, the mighty one.

Mantra 2

कुत्रा चिद्यस्य समृतौ रण्वा नरो नृषदने । अर्हन्तश्चिद्यमिन्धते संजनयन्ति जन्तवः ॥

Where indeed is that one—at whose coming-together men rejoice in the seat of the human being? Even the worthy kindle him; the creatures generate him into manifestation.

Mantra 3

सं यदिषो वनामहे सं हव्या मानुषाणाम् । उत द्युम्नस्य शवस ऋतस्य रश्मिमा ददे ॥

When we gather together the impulsions of increase, and also the human offerings, then by the force of luminous power he places within us the ray of ṛta—the straight thread of the Truth-order.

Mantra 4

स स्मा कृणोति केतुमा नक्तं चिद्दूर आ सते । पावको यद्वनस्पतीन्प्र स्मा मिनात्यजरः ॥

He indeed fashions a sign of light, even in the night, and it is seen from far away; the purifier, the ageless one, when he presses forward and breaks open the lords of the forest, releases the hidden blaze.

Mantra 5

अव स्म यस्य वेषणे स्वेदं पथिषु जुह्वति । अभीमह स्वजेन्यं भूमा पृष्ठेव रुरुहुः ॥

Downward (into the embodied ways), for him whose driving onward casts its heat upon the paths, we press toward the self-conquering power; and the wide earth-nature rises up like a back beneath the burden, made fit for the journey.

Mantra 6

यं मर्त्यः पुरुस्पृहं विदद्विश्वस्य धायसे । प्र स्वादनं पितूनामस्ततातिं चिदायवे ॥

Whom the mortal discovers—much-desired—as the establisher for all, he brings forward for the seeker the sweetness of the nourishments, even a widening abundance of the home-state.

Mantra 7

स हि ष्मा धन्वाक्षितं दाता न दात्या पशुः । हिरिश्मश्रुः शुचिदन्नृभुरनिभृष्टतविषिः ॥

For he indeed gives the unexhausted wide expanse; like a giver he bestows the living powers. Golden-bearded, pure-toothed, the skilful fashioner, his force is not to be blunted.

Mantra 8

शुचिः ष्म यस्मा अत्रिवत्प्र स्वधितीव रीयते । सुषूरसूत माता क्राणा यदानशे भगम् ॥

Pure indeed is he for whom—like for Atri—he rushes forth like a well-whetted axe; then the fruitful mother brings to birth, growing in power, when she attains the portion of delight and felicity.

आ यस्ते सर्पिरासुतेऽग्ने शमस्ति धायसे । ऐषु द्युम्नमुत श्रव आ चित्तं मर्त्येषु धाः ॥

He who pours out for you the clarified richness, O Agni—there is peace for your establishing power; place then among these mortals the luminous plenitude, and the inspired hearing, and the awakened mind.

Mantra 10

इति चिन्मन्युमध्रिजस्त्वादातमा पशुं ददे । आदग्ने अपृणतोऽत्रिः सासह्याद्दस्यूनिषः सासह्यान्नॄन् ॥

Thus even the unkindled (or the ill-ordered) gives up his wrath and offers the living power won through you. Then, O Agni, Atri—unfailing in the giving—would overpower the dasyus: he would win the impulsions of increase, he would win the true men (the strong soul-forces).
