Sukta 62

Mantra 1

ऋतेन ऋतमपिहितं ध्रुवं वां सूर्यस्य यत्र विमुचन्त्यश्वान् । दश शता सह तस्थुस्तदेकं देवानां श्रेष्ठं वपुषामपश्यम् ॥

By Truth (ṛta) is Truth established, firm for you two, where the Sun releases his horses. Ten and a hundred stand together there; that One—most excellent among the forms of the gods—I beheld: the supreme harmony of ordered Light.

Mantra 2

तत्सु वां मित्रावरुणा महित्वमीर्मा तस्थुषीरहभिर्दुदुह्रे । विश्वाः पिन्वथः स्वसरस्य धेना अनु वामेकः पविरा ववर्त ॥

This indeed is your greatness, O Mitra and Varuṇa: the streams that stand firm are milked out by the days. You fill all the milk-cows of the self-flowing fountain; following you, the single purifier turns and returns—sharpening the being toward Truth.

Mantra 3

अधारयतं पृथिवीमुत द्यां मित्रराजाना वरुणा महोभिः । वर्धयतमोषधीः पिन्वतं गा अव वृष्टिं सृजतं जीरदानू ॥

You upheld Earth and Heaven, O royal Mitra and Varuṇa, by your vast powers. You increase the herbs, you swell the rays/cows of illumination; you release downward the rain—pouring the quick-giving energies that renew the being.

Mantra 4

आ वामश्वासः सुयुजो वहन्तु यतरश्मय उप यन्त्वर्वाक् । घृतस्य निर्णिगनु वर्तते वामुप सिन्धवः प्रदिवि क्षरन्ति ॥

May your well-yoked horses carry you here; may the reins of right direction come near, moving toward us. The shining robe of ghee (clarified light) follows you; the rivers of abundance flow toward you, streaming forth in the higher heaven.

Mantra 5

अनु श्रुताममतिं वर्धदुर्वीं बर्हिरिव यजुषा रक्षमाणा । नमस्वन्ता धृतदक्षाधि गर्ते मित्रासाथे वरुणेळास्वन्तः ॥

Following the heard (revealed) insight, you enlarge the wide intelligence, guarding it by the sacred ordering (yajuṣ) as one guards the barhis. With adoration, holding firm the discerning power, you sit in the seat (garte), O Mitra and Varuṇa, attended by the forces of Ila—nourishments of truth.

Mantra 6

अक्रविहस्ता सुकृते परस्पा यं त्रासाथे वरुणेळास्वन्तः । राजाना क्षत्रमहृणीयमाना सहस्रस्थूणं बिभृथः सह द्वौ ॥

With hands that do not wound, guardians of the good work, protectors from beyond, you two give safety—O Varuṇa with Ilā’s attendance. As kings, unoffended in your sovereignty, you uphold the thousand-pillared power: the vast structure of ordered rule within the being.

Mantra 7

हिरण्यनिर्णिगयो अस्य स्थूणा वि भ्राजते दिव्यश्वाजनीव । भद्रे क्षेत्रे निमिता तिल्विले वा सनेम मध्वो अधिगर्त्यस्य ॥

Golden is the shining robe; of metal are his pillars—he blazes in heaven like a stable of swift horses. Set in a благ (fortunate) field, fixed in the talvila (firm base) we would win the honeyed delight of the one established in the seat—tasting the sweetness of truth in the founded consciousness.

Mantra 8

हिरण्यरूपमुषसो व्युष्टावयःस्थूणमुदिता सूर्यस्य । आ रोहथो वरुण मित्र गर्तमतश्चक्षाथे अदितिं दितिं च ॥

At the full outshining of Dawn, when the Sun has arisen, there stands revealed the golden Form and the firm pillar of strength. Then you ascend, O Varuṇa and Mitra, to the seat of vision; from there you behold both Aditi (the infinite wideness) and Diti (the division and limitation).

Mantra 9

यद्बंहिष्ठं नातिविधे सुदानू अच्छिद्रं शर्म भुवनस्य गोपा । तेन नो मित्रावरुणावविष्टं सिषासन्तो जिगीवांसः स्याम ॥

That widest, un-overpassed shelter—unbroken and whole—by which you are the guardians of the world: with that, O Mitra and Varuṇa, protect us, so that aspiring ever onward we may become conquerors in life.
