Sukta 4.36
Rbhus (or poet addressing them within the Rbhu cycle of Book 4)
Rbhus
Trishtubh (probable)
This hymn praises the Ṛbhus—divine artisan-brothers—celebrating their wondrous crafts (like the self-moving, three-wheeled chariot) as signs of a power that enlarges and sustains Heaven and Earth. It links their perfected skill (takṣaṇa) with the birth of prosperity, fame, and victorious plenitude, and ends with an intimate request: “here and now” fashion for us progeny, wealth, and heroic renown that awakens higher awareness.
Mantra 1
A chariot is born without horses, without reins, fit for the hymn; with three wheels it moves around through the luminous spaces. Great is this your divine fame, O Rbhus, for you foster and increase both Heaven and Earth (the two planes of our being).
Mantra 2
You who made the chariot well-turned, O clear-minded ones—unwavering, shaped by the surrounding meditation of the mind—those very powers we now summon for the drinking of this Soma-pressing, O Vāja and Rbhus; we make you known here (to our consciousness).
Mantra 3
This is your well-proclaimable greatness among the gods, O Vāja and Rbhus: that, though your parents were old, you fashioned them again as young, fit for movement and for the journey.
Mantra 4
You made the one cup into four; and from hide you brought forth the Cow by your thought-forces. Then you attained immortality among the gods. O Śruṣṭī, Vāja, and Rbhus—this is your hymn-worthy deed.
Mantra 5
The wealth (rayi) born of Rbhu-skill is most first in fame; it is that which the manly powers, famed for plenitude, have generated. Fashioned by Vibhu, it is to be proclaimed in the assemblies; him the gods aid—he becomes a wide-ranging possessor of vision and force.
Mantra 6
He becomes the carrier of plenitude, the swift steed; he becomes the seer by the power of inspired speech; he becomes the hero, a hard-to-cross combatant in the inner battles. He holds the increase of inner wealth and true hero-force—he whom Vāja and the pervading Rbhus have made manifest.
Mantra 7
Your best form of beauty has been set here, visible: the hymn, O Vāja and Rbhus—take delight in it. For you are indeed the steady wise ones, poets of luminous discernment; by this sacred utterance (brahman) we make you present to our awareness.
Mantra 8
You, knowing ones, from the dhīṣaṇā-powers all around, enjoy all the manly energies. Fashion for us a radiant plenitude (vāja), with bull-like force, the highest; and fashion for us, O Rbhus, the rayi—our growth and fullness of life.
Mantra 9
Here, in this very life, delighting in us, fashion for us progeny of the soul, fashion for us inner wealth, fashion for us fame rich in heroic force—by which we may become conscious beyond others. That many-colored plenitude of victory, O Rbhus, grant to us.
The Ṛbhus are divine artisan-brothers (Ṛbhu, Vibhu/Vibhvan, and Vāja) praised for perfect craftsmanship that renews and multiplies forms and brings prosperity.
It is a poetic marvel showing Ṛbhu power: a symbol of perfected formation and effortless motion through the luminous realms—often read as craft elevated into divine capability.
It asks them to “fashion” benefits in this life: progeny, inner wealth (rayi), heroic fame (śravas with vīra-power), and a many-colored vāja (victorious plenitude) that awakens higher awareness.
