This hymn praises Mitra as the Āditya who speaks and establishes the “right word,” setting human communities into orderly, harmonious movement. It presents Mitra as the steady upholder of Heaven and Earth, the all-seeing guardian of social truth and right conduct, and urges clarified offerings through Agni to gain his favor, protection, and prosperity.
Mantra 1
मित्रो जनान्यातयति ब्रुवाणो मित्रो दाधार पृथिवीमुत द्याम् । मित्रः कृष्टीरनिमिषाभि चष्टे मित्राय हव्यं घृतवज्जुहोत ॥
Mitra, speaking the right word, sets the peoples in their true movement; Mitra upholds Earth and also Heaven. Mitra, with unblinking vision, regards the races of men. Offer the oblation rich with clarified light to Mitra.
Mantra 2
प्र स मित्र मर्तो अस्तु प्रयस्वान्यस्त आदित्य शिक्षति व्रतेन । न हन्यते न जीयते त्वोतो नैनमंहो अश्नोत्यन्तितो न दूरात् ॥
Let the mortal become one who goes forward with Mitra—rich in the right offering—who, O Āditya, learns and is trained by thy law of harmony. He is not struck down, nor is he conquered; guarded by thee, no anguish reaches him, neither from near nor from far.
Mantra 3
अनमीवास इळया मदन्तो मितज्ञवो वरिमन्ना पृथिव्याः । आदित्यस्य व्रतमुपक्षियन्तो वयं मित्रस्य सुमतौ स्याम ॥
May we be without inner sickness, rejoicing in the illumined flow, knowing the measure, dwelling in the wideness from the Earth’s foundation. Abiding in the ordinance of the Āditya, may we be in the happy wisdom and right-mindedness of Mitra.
Mantra 4
अयं मित्रो नमस्यः सुशेवो राजा सुक्षत्रो अजनिष्ट वेधाः । तस्य वयं सुमतौ यज्ञियस्यापि भद्रे सौमनसे स्याम ॥
This Mitra is to be bowed to—benign, a king of good dominion, a wise disposer born for the work. In the right understanding of that adorable Power, may we be also in the glad and auspicious harmony of the soul.
Mantra 5
महाँ आदित्यो नमसोपसद्यो यातयज्जनो गृणते सुशेवः । तस्मा एतत्पन्यतमाय जुष्टमग्नौ मित्राय हविरा जुहोत ॥
Great is the Āditya, approachable by reverence, who sets men on the right path and is gracious to the singer. Therefore offer into Agni this oblation—most worthy and pleasing—for Mitra who is most admirable.
Mantra 6
मित्रस्य चर्षणीधृतोऽवो देवस्य सानसि । द्युम्नं चित्रश्रवस्तमम् ॥
Win for us the help of Mitra, the god who upholds the peoples; and gain the radiant puissance, most rich in manifold fame—luminous in its hearing and spreading.
Mantra 7
अभि यो महिना दिवं मित्रो बभूव सप्रथाः । अभि श्रवोभिः पृथिवीम् ॥
He who by his greatness became Mitra—wide-spread over heaven; and wide-spread by his powers of inspired hearing over the Earth.
Mantra 8
मित्राय पञ्च येमिरे जना अभिष्टिशवसे । स देवान्विश्वान्बिभर्ति ॥
To Mitra the five peoples yoke themselves, for the strength that brings help and victory; he bears and upholds all the gods (all the divine powers) within the ordered unity.
Mantra 9
मित्रो देवेष्वायुषु जनाय वृक्तबर्हिषे । इष इष्टव्रता अकः ॥
Mitra, among the gods and in the streams of life, works for the human who has spread the sacred seat (made the ground ready). He fashions the impulsions of plenitude for those whose chosen law is fulfilled.
Mitra is an Āditya who keeps truth, harmony, and trustworthy relations in the world. The hymn describes him as upholding Heaven and Earth and watching people with steady, unblinking awareness.
Right speech and right conduct create order in society, and Mitra is the divine power that supports this order. By offering to Mitra through Agni, the worshipper seeks harmony, protection, and nourishing prosperity (iṣ).
It suits a fire offering where ghṛta and other havis are poured into Agni “for Mitra.” The hymn especially fits occasions that require strengthening agreements, communal unity, and disciplined adherence to one’s chosen rule (vrata).
