Sukta 9

Mantra 1

इन्द्रेहि मत्स्यन्धसो विश्वेभिः सोमपर्वभिः । महाँ अभिष्टिरोजसा ॥

O Indra, come. Drink deeply of the Soma-essence through all its uplifted intensities; for thou art the vast power of victorious attainment by thy force.

Mantra 2

एमेनं सृजता सुते मन्दिमिन्द्राय मन्दिने । चक्रिं विश्वानि चक्रये ॥

Release him, this pressed Soma, the ecstasy, for Indra the Exhilarator; (release) the doer who sets all things in motion for the Wheel of the Truth’s working.

Mantra 3

मत्स्वा सुशिप्र मन्दिभिः स्तोमेभिर्विश्वचर्षणे । सचैषु सवनेष्वा ॥

Become intoxicated with delight, O fair-lipped Power, by our rapturous energies and by the hymns; O all-seeing ruler of the peoples, come in union to these pressings (of Soma) here.

Mantra 4

असृग्रमिन्द्र ते गिरः प्रति त्वामुदहासत । अजोषा वृषभं पतिम् ॥

O Indra, our inspired words have surged forth towards you and risen up—seeking to win you, the Bull, the Lord; that sovereign force in us which accepts and increases the soul’s power.

Mantra 5

सं चोदय चित्रमर्वाग्राध इन्द्र वरेण्यम् । असदित्ते विभु प्रभु ॥

Urge forward toward us (into our being) the luminous and manifold plenitude of delight, O Indra, the most choice-worthy; may it indeed become for thee—wide and sovereign—here in us.

Mantra 6

अस्मान्त्सु तत्र चोदयेन्द्र राये रभस्वतः । तुविद्युम्न यशस्वतः ॥

O Indra, impel us—yes, lead us there—towards the wealth of plenitude: towards the swift and ardent force, towards the abundant luminous power, towards the victorious wideness of renown within the soul.

Mantra 7

सं गोमदिन्द्र वाजवदस्मे पृथु श्रवो बृहत् । विश्वायुर्धेह्यक्षितम् ॥

O Indra, gather into us the luminous riches (the Rays of true knowledge) and the plenitude of force; place in us the wide and vast fame of the Truth, and establish an unperishing all-life in our being.

Mantra 8

अस्मे धेहि श्रवो बृहद्द्युम्नं सहस्रसातमम् । इन्द्र ता रथिनीरिषः ॥

In us, O Indra, establish the vast fame and the luminous plenitude that wins a thousandfold; and set in motion for us those impulsions of delight that come yoked like chariots—swift, forceful, and victorious.

Mantra 9

वसोरिन्द्रं वसुपतिं गीर्भिर्गृणन्त ऋग्मियम् । होम गन्तारमूतये ॥

With our mantras we affirm Indra, the Lord of plenitudes, the singer of the Riks; we call him to come to the offering for our protection—so that the wealth of the Vast may become active in us.

Mantra 10

सुतेसुते न्योकसे बृहद्बृहत एदरिः । इन्द्राय शूषमर्चति ॥

At each pressing of the Soma, to Indra who dwells within and is the Vast and the ever-Vaster, the aspiring seeker indeed comes forward and chants the hymn of impetuous force—an offering of awakened energy to Indra.
