Sukta 63

Mantra 1

त्वं महाँ इन्द्र यो ह शुष्मैर्द्यावा जज्ञानः पृथिवी अमे धाः । यद्ध ते विश्वा गिरयश्चिदभ्वा भिया दृळ्हासः किरणा नैजन् ॥

You are the Great One, O Indra—who by your forces, being born with Heaven and Earth, set them in their proper measures. When even all the vast mountains, firm-set, did not stir—held by awe of you, as rays are steadied in their course.

Mantra 2

आ यद्धरी इन्द्र विव्रता वेरा ते वज्रं जरिता बाह्वोर्धात् । येनाविहर्यतक्रतो अमित्रान्पुर इष्णासि पुरुहूत पूर्वीः ॥

When your two radiant steeds, O Indra, wide-ranging, come near, the singer sets your thunderbolt in your arms—by which, O irresistible in will, you drive against the hostile powers and shatter many ancient strongholds, O much-invoked.

Mantra 3

त्वं सत्य इन्द्र धृष्णुरेतान्त्वमृभुक्षा नर्यस्त्वं षाट् । त्वं शुष्णं वृजने पृक्ष आणौ यूने कुत्साय द्युमते सचाहन् ॥

You are the Truth, O Indra, daring in these acts; you are the master of skill, the heroic, the victorious. You struck down Śuṣṇa in the battle-press, in the clash of onset, together with the young and luminous Kutsa—so the light-bearing may prevail.

Mantra 4

त्वं ह त्यदिन्द्र चोदीः सखा वृत्रं यद्वज्रिन्वृषकर्मन्नुभ्नाः । यद्ध शूर वृषमणः पराचैर्वि दस्यूँर्योनावकृतो वृथाषाट् ॥

You indeed, O Indra, impelled your comrade-force when, O wielder of the bolt, doer of the mighty work, you struck down Vṛtra. When, O hero, strong in delight of power, you drove apart the Dasyus and cast them down into the womb of obscurity—victorious over falsehood.

Mantra 5

त्वं ह त्यदिन्द्रारिषण्यन्दृळ्हस्य चिन्मर्तानामजुष्टौ । व्यस्मदा काष्ठा अर्वते वर्घनेव वज्रिञ्छ्नथिह्यमित्रान् ॥

You indeed, O Indra, guarding us from harm—even against the hard-set resistance of mortals who consent not—drive away from us the hostile limits. As with a hammer, O wielder of the bolt, smash the enemies for our onward movement.

Mantra 6

त्वां ह त्यदिन्द्रार्णसातौ स्वर्मीळ्हे नर आजा हवन्ते । तव स्वधाव इयमा समर्य ऊतिर्वाजेष्वतसाय्या भूत् ॥

You indeed, O Indra, in the winning of the flood of energies, in the gaining of the luminous world, men call in battle. O self-powered one, may this your help come close in the encounter and become irresistible in the plenitudes of force.

Mantra 7

त्वं ह त्यदिन्द्र सप्त युध्यन्पुरो वज्रिन्पुरुकुत्साय दर्दः । बर्हिर्न यत्सुदासे वृथा वर्गंहो राजन्वरिवः पूरवे कः ॥

You indeed, O Indra, fighting, O bolt-bearer, broke the seven strongholds for Purukutsa. And when, like a spreading sacred seat, you opened a free path for Sudās against the wrong oppression—O king, who else could grant such wide room for Pūru?

Mantra 8

त्वं त्यां न इन्द्र देव चित्रामिषमापो न पीपयः परिज्मन् । यया शूर प्रत्यस्मभ्यं यंसि त्मनमूर्जं न विश्वध क्षरध्यै ॥

You, O Indra the divine, nourish for us that varied and shining delight/impulse, as waters nourish the circling world; by which, O hero, you turn toward us and make our being flow—like a universal stream of strength—pouring out on every side.

Mantra 9

अकारि त इन्द्र गोतमेभिर्ब्रह्माण्योक्ता नमसा हरिभ्याम् । सुपेशसं वाजमा भरा नः प्रातर्मक्षू धियावसुर्जगम्यात् ॥

For you, O Indra, the Gotamas have wrought and spoken words of power with reverence for your radiant steeds. Bring to us the well-formed plenitude of force; and may the rich treasure of inspired thought come swiftly at the dawn.
