Sukta 1.42
Pūṣan
This hymn is a travel-prayer to Pūṣan, asking him to go before the worshipper on the road, remove distress and danger, and guide safely to the desired destination. It also seeks well-won prosperity—rightly gained and rightly enjoyed—under Pūṣan’s guardianship, concluding with peaceful praise rather than contention, and a request for enduring riches.
Mantra 1
O Pūṣan, stretch out for us across the road; O child of release, loosen away the distress: O god, go with us in front, as our companion-leader.
Mantra 2
O Pūṣan, the harmful wolf who points us to ill-faring—strike him away from the path for us.
Mantra 3
Cast away—far beyond our track—the one who blocks the path all around, the thief of our gains, the dark-minded disturber; drive him off into a remoteness beyond the stream of our right going.
Mantra 4
Thou—against that double-dealing one, whoever he be, the ill-speaker who calls misfortune—stand over him with thy step; press down his burning force (and make it powerless).
Mantra 5
We choose for ourselves that saving help of thine, O wondrous Pūṣan, that inspired guidance by which thou didst set the Fathers in motion—leading them on the true way.
Mantra 6
Then make for us, O universal giver of good fortune, thou richest in the golden plenitude, our treasures well-won and rightly enjoyed—establish in us a happy possessing.
Mantra 7
Lead us beyond the clinging entanglements; make for us the good-going, make for us the good path. O Pūṣan, here know and awaken the right will in us.
Mantra 8
Lead us into the good pasture of luminous increase; let no new fever seize the journey. O Pūṣan, here know and set right our will.
Mantra 9
Grant us strength and fill us; give forth and increase; sharpen our energies; and satisfy the inner hunger. O Pūṣan, here know and order our will.
Mantra 10
We do not contend with Pūṣan; with well-shaped utterances we acclaim him. We seek from the wondrous one the true riches of being.
Pūṣan is the Vedic deity who guides people on roads and journeys, protects them from harm, and helps them reach their goal safely while granting well-being and prosperity.
Its main purpose is to ask for safe passage—Pūṣan going in front, clearing obstacles and distress—and to request stable, rightly gained wealth and good fortune.
It is traditionally suitable before starting a journey, at dawn, or as part of a simple fire offering or prayer when seeking protection, guidance, and successful outcomes without harm.
