Savitṛ (with Viśvānara aspect)
This hymn is an invitational litany that calls Savitṛ in his Viśvānara (“all-pervading, all-in-man”) aspect to enter the sacrifice with the illumined streams of offering and to widen the worshipper’s inspired will to embrace the whole moving world. As the praise unfolds, allied deities—especially Tvaṣṭṛ and Indra Vṛtrahan—are invoked to join in a shared “abhipitva” (intimate dwelling/communion), granting vigor, settled stability, and enduring riches. The hymn culminates in the image of dīdhiti (bright kindling/inner illumination) as the sustaining presence through which the seeker labors among the gods and comes to know the strong host of boons.
Mantra 1
आ न इळाभिर्विदथे सुशस्ति विश्वानरः सविता देव एतु । अपि यथा युवानो मत्सथा नो विश्वं जगदभिपित्वे मनीषा ॥
Come to us with the streams of illumined offerings in the assembly of seeking, O Savitṛ the divine, the All-in-man. So that, as youthful powers, you may rejoice in us; may our inspired will embrace the whole moving world in the intimacy of its true home.
Mantra 2
आ नो विश्व आस्क्रा गमन्तु देवा मित्रो अर्यमा वरुणः सजोषाः । भुवन्यथा नो विश्वे वृधासः करन्त्सुषाहा विथुरं न शवः ॥
May all the gods come to us in swift advance—Mitra, Aryaman, Varuṇa in one accord—so that all the increasers may become for us powers of firm endurance, making our force unshaken, not scattered.
Mantra 3
प्रेष्ठं वो अतिथिं गृणीषेऽग्निं शस्तिभिस्तुर्वणिः सजोषाः । असद्यथा नो वरुणः सुकीर्तिरिषश्च पर्षदरिगूर्तः सूरिः ॥
I utter for you the most beloved Guest—Agni, the swift impeller—praised with our affirmations, in a harmony of one delight. May Varuṇa, of luminous renown, be so with us; and may the well-guided seer carry us across to the impulsions of plenitude, beyond the hostile resistances.
Mantra 4
उप व एषे नमसा जिगीषोषासानक्ता सुदुघेव धेनुः । समाने अहन्विमिमानो अर्कं विषुरूपे पयसि सस्मिन्नूधन् ॥
To you I come near with obeisance, seeking to win: Dawn and Night, like a richly milking Cow. In the common day they measure out the hymn of light, in their differently formed streams of milk, in that very udder.
Mantra 5
उत नोऽहिर्बुध्न्यो मयस्कः शिशुं न पिप्युषीव वेति सिन्धुः । येन नपातमपां जुनाम मनोजुवो वृषणो यं वहन्ति ॥
And may for us Ahi Budhnya, the deep-founded Serpent of blissful power, move like a river-cow that nourishes her young. By him may we awaken Apām Napāt, whom the strong and mind-swift energies bear onward.
Mantra 6
उत न ईं त्वष्टा गन्त्वच्छा स्मत्सूरिभिरभिपित्वे सजोषाः । आ वृत्रहेन्द्रश्चर्षणिप्रास्तुविष्टमो नरां न इह गम्याः ॥
And may Tvashṭṛ come to us, hither from our side, together with the illumined leaders, in a oneness of delight in our intimate dwelling. And may Indra the slayer of Vṛtra, the fulfiller of the peoples, the most puissant, come here to us among men.
Mantra 7
उत न ईं मतयोऽश्वयोगाः शिशुं न गावस्तरुणं रिहन्ति । तमीं गिरो जनयो न पत्नीः सुरभिष्टमं नरां नसन्त ॥
And may our thoughts, yoked like steeds, lick and foster him as cows their young calf. Him the utterances, like wives their lord, draw near—the most fragrant (most delight-giving) among men.
Mantra 8
उत न ईं मरुतो वृद्धसेनाः स्मद्रोदसी समनसः सदन्तु । पृषदश्वासोऽवनयो न रथा रिशादसो मित्रयुजो न देवाः ॥
And may the Maruts, with their grown armies, sit with us in one mind, together with Heaven and Earth. With dappled steeds, like chariots of the woodlands, devourers of the hostile, yoked to friendship—may these gods take their seat.
Mantra 9
प्र नु यदेषां महिना चिकित्रे प्र युञ्जते प्रयुजस्ते सुवृक्ति । अध यदेषां सुदिने न शरुर्विश्वमेरिणं प्रुषायन्त सेनाः ॥
Now indeed, by their greatness it becomes manifest: they yoke their yoked powers forward, and the rightly woven hymn goes with them. Then, on their good day, no dart can wound; their hosts sprinkle and drive the whole field into motion.
Mantra 10
प्रो अश्विनाववसे कृणुध्वं प्र पूषणं स्वतवसो हि सन्ति । अद्वेषो विष्णुर्वात ऋभुक्षा अच्छा सुम्नाय ववृतीय देवान् ॥
Set forward the Ashvins for our help; set forward Pūṣan, for they are of self-power. Let Vishnu, without hostility, and Vāta, and Ṛbhukṣā, turn hither the gods for our felicity.
Mantra 11
इयं सा वो अस्मे दीधितिर्यजत्रा अपिप्राणी च सदनी च भूयाः । नि या देवेषु यतते वसूयुर्विद्यामेषं वृजनं जीरदानुम् ॥
This is that bright kindling for you, O adorable ones—may it be for us a breathing fullness and a seated stability. By it, as the seeker of the Riches labors among the gods, may we come to know this vigorous host, the giver of long-enduring bounty.
The hymn mainly invokes Savitṛ, the divine Impeller, with a Viśvānara aspect—an all-pervading presence that enters the human assembly and the sacrifice.
The sukta widens the invocation to allied powers: Tvaṣṭṛ represents right formation and shaping, and Indra Vṛtrahan represents breaking obstacles—both supporting the sacrificer’s aim of fullness and prosperity.
Dīdhiti is the bright kindling or inner illumination—both the sacrificial flame and the awakened light of understanding—asked to become ‘breathing fullness’ and ‘seated stability’ for the worshipper.
