This hymn praises Mitra and Varuṇa as the beloved twin lords who uphold ṛta (cosmic order) and guard beings from birth, responding to the seer’s word with protection and increase. It depicts their power as opening “wide gates,” releasing pure, nourishing streams, and drawing dawn and sunlight into manifestation, culminating in a proclamation of their unmatched godhead and generous bestowal.

Mantra 1

मित्रं न यं शिम्या गोषु गव्यवः स्वाध्यो विदथे अप्सु जीजनन् । अरेजेतां रोदसी पाजसा गिरा प्रति प्रियं यजतं जनुषामवः ॥

Like a Friend, whom the seekers of the luminous herds bring to birth by their striving—by self-law in the gathering, in the Waters—so the two Worlds tremble to their force. With the word they answer the beloved and adorable pair, the guardianship of beings from birth onward.

Mantra 2

यद्ध त्यद्वां पुरुमीळ्हस्य सोमिनः प्र मित्रासो न दधिरे स्वाभुवः । अध क्रतुं विदतं गातुमर्चत उत श्रुतं वृषणा पस्त्यावतः ॥

When indeed those Soma-pressers, seeking rich grace, put forward your working as friends, self-effective—then they hymn your will and find the path. And you, O two mighty ones, make them heard and established within the home of their being.

Mantra 3

आ वां भूषन्क्षितयो जन्म रोदस्योः प्रवाच्यं वृषणा दक्षसे महे । यदीमृताय भरथो यदर्वते प्र होत्रया शिम्या वीथो अध्वरम् ॥

To you two, O mighty ones, the peoples from birth in both worlds come with adornment and the word that must be spoken—for your great skill and power. When you bear it for the Truth, when for the swift mover, then by the priestly action and by striving you guide the sacrifice forward.

Mantra 4

प्र सा क्षितिरसुर या महि प्रिय ऋतावानावृतमा घोषथो बृहत् । युवं दिवो बृहतो दक्षमाभुवं गां न धुर्युप युञ्जाथे अपः ॥

This great and beloved sovereignty, O Asura-powers, you proclaim as the Vast Truth, you who are possessed of ṛta. You two have become the mighty skill of the wide heaven; and you yoke the Waters like a draught-cow to the yoke—making the currents serve the work.

Mantra 5

मही अत्र महिना वारमृण्वथोऽरेणवस्तुज आ सद्मन्धेनवः । स्वरन्ति ता उपरताति सूर्यमा निम्रुच उषसस्तक्ववीरिव ॥

Here, by your greatness, you open the wide gate; the spotless, impelling streams come to the seat like nourishing cows. They sound upward toward the Sun; and the Dawns come down into manifestation like swift-flying ones—bringing the descent of light into our field.

Mantra 6

आ वामृताय केशिनीरनूषत मित्र यत्र वरुण गातुमर्चथः । अव त्मना सृजतं पिन्वतं धियो युवं विप्रस्य मन्मनामिरज्यथः ॥

Towards you, for the Law of Truth, the bright-maned powers of inspiration have chanted, O Mitra—where, O Varuṇa, you acclaim the path. By your own being, release and intensify our thoughts; you two take delight in the inspired seer’s inner formations of mind.

Mantra 7

यो वां यज्ञैः शशमानो ह दाशति कविर्होता यजति मन्मसाधनः । उपाह तं गच्छथो वीथो अध्वरमच्छा गिरः सुमतिं गन्तमस्मयू ॥

Whoever, growing in strength through the offerings, gives to you—he, the seer and the hotar, sacrifices as one who accomplishes the inner word. To him indeed you two go; come to the rite’s journey, to the chants—arrive with your luminous goodwill for us who seek you.

Mantra 8

युवां यज्ञैः प्रथमा गोभिरञ्जत ऋतावाना मनसो न प्रयुक्तिषु । भरन्ति वां मन्मना संयता गिरोऽदृप्यता मनसा रेवदाशाथे ॥

You two, first, are anointed by the offerings and by the rays of illumination—upholders of ṛta—like the mind in its right harnessings. The controlled chants carry to you the inner formations; with a mind free from intoxication and error you grant the plenitude that is rich and luminous.

Mantra 9

रेवद्वयो दधाथे रेवदाशाथे नरा मायाभिरितऊति माहिनम् । न वां द्यावोऽहभिर्नोत सिन्धवो न देवत्वं पणयो नानशुर्मघम् ॥

You establish the rich life-force; you grant the rich fulfilment, O two lords, by your powers of wise formation and your help from near. Neither the heavens with their days, nor the rivers, have reached your godhead; nor have the traffickers of darkness won your largesse.

Frequently Asked Questions

They are twin Vedic lords invoked together: Mitra represents friendship and agreement, and Varuṇa represents vast moral law and restraint. Together they protect beings and uphold cosmic order (ṛta).

It is a poetic image for removing obstruction and allowing the flow of life and light—pure streams, dawn, and the sun’s radiance—into the world and into the worshipper’s path.

The paṇis symbolize forces that hoard, obscure, or oppose the right order. The hymn declares that such forces cannot obtain Mitra-Varuṇa’s divine status or their generous gifts.
