Sukta 10

Mantra 1

गायन्ति त्वा गायत्रिणोऽर्चन्त्यर्कमर्किणः । ब्रह्माणस्त्वा शतक्रत उद्वंशमिव येमिरे ॥

The chanters of the Gayatrī sing to thee; the seers of the hymn affirm thy luminous Word. O Śatakratu, the brahmāṇas uplift thee, as one raises a bamboo-staff—so that the Power of many workings may stand erect in us and lead the ascent.

Mantra 2

यत्सानोः सानुमारुहद्भूर्यस्पष्ट कर्त्वम् । तदिन्द्रो अर्थं चेतति यूथेन वृष्णिरेजति ॥

When the soul climbs from peak to peak, there is much work to be made clear and rightly shaped; that true aim Indra perceives, and the Bull-power moves forward with the herd—gathering the many forces into one victorious advance.

Mantra 3

युक्ष्वा हि केशिना हरी वृषणा कक्ष्यप्रा । अथा न इन्द्र सोमपा गिरामुपश्रुतिं चर ॥

Yoke, indeed, the two tawny powers with flowing manes—those strong ones that fill the girdle of the being. Then, O Indra, drinker of Soma, move near to our inspired utterance and listen inwardly to its call.

Mantra 4

एहि स्तोमाँ अभि स्वराभि गृणीह्या रुव । ब्रह्म च नो वसो सचेन्द्र यज्ञं च वर्धय ॥

Come; answer our hymns with your shining utterance—sing forth, cry aloud. O Indra, companion of our aspiration, increase for us the brahman (the inspired word) and the yajña (the inner offering).

Mantra 5

उक्थमिन्द्राय शंस्यं वर्धनं पुरुनिष्षिधे । शक्रो यथा सुतेषु णो रारणत्सख्येषु च ॥

A hymn of inspired utterance for Indra—worthy to be proclaimed—an increase of force for the many-accomplishing Power; so that the Mighty One, in our poured Soma-energies, may take delight, and also in our acts of comradeship.

Mantra 6

तमित्सखित्व ईमहे तं राये तं सुवीर्ये । स शक्र उत नः शकदिन्द्रो वसु दयमानः ॥

Him indeed, in the joy of comradeship, we seek—him for the soul’s plenitude (rāyí), him for the fullness of heroic force (su-vīrya). May Indra the Mighty be able for us, granting the luminous substance of being (vasu) as his gift.

Mantra 7

सुविवृतं सुनिरजमिन्द्र त्वादातमिद्यशः । गवामप व्रजं वृधि कृणुष्व राधो अद्रिवः ॥

O Indra, wielder of the pressing-stone, the glory that is given by you is a wide opening and a sure driving-force. Increase for us the pen of the Cows (the rays of inner Light); open it out—make the plenitude (rādhas) manifest.

Mantra 8

नहि त्वा रोदसी उभे ऋघायमाणमिन्वतः । जेषः स्वर्वतीरपः सं गा अस्मभ्यं धूनुहि ॥

For neither Heaven nor Earth can drive you back when you surge forward in your impetuous might. O Conqueror, shake down for us together the waters that bear the luminous world, and the rays of Light (the Cows).

Mantra 9

आश्रुत्कर्ण श्रुधी हवं नू चिद्दधिष्व मे गिरः । इन्द्र स्तोममिमं मम कृष्वा युजश्चिदन्तरम् ॥

O Indra, you whose ear is quick to hear, listen to our call; even now receive and hold within you my inspired words. Make this my hymn a thing of intimate union—entering even into the inmost space of the yoked powers (of the being).

Mantra 10

विद्मा हि त्वा वृषन्तमं वाजेषु हवनश्रुतम् । वृषन्तमस्य हूमह ऊतिं सहस्रसातमाम् ॥

For we know you as the most potent Bull-power, the Hearer of the call amid the plenitudes of force; therefore we invoke the help of that Most-Potent One—his protection that wins a thousandfold, the mighty rescue in our inner battle.

Mantra 11

आ तू न इन्द्र कौशिक मन्दसानः सुतं पिब । नव्यमायुः प्र सू तिर कृधी सहस्रसामृषिम् ॥

Come to us, O Indra of the Kuśikas; rejoicing inwardly, drink the pressed Soma. Make for us a new extension of life and lead it forward in a happy crossing; fashion the seer in us into a singer of a thousand chants (a vast mantric power).

Mantra 12

परि त्वा गिर्वणो गिर इमा भवन्तु विश्वतः । वृद्धायुमनु वृद्धयो जुष्टा भवन्तु जुष्टयः ॥

O Indra who delightest in the chant, let these words encompass thee from every side. Following thy enlarged life-force, may our growths become accepted and made dear—may the right enjoyments and harmonies consent to us.
