Inside Sukta 42

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

A “most peace-bringing” hymn is launched toward the Ādityas, asking them to hear and establish unhindered well-being.

  2. Development

The prayer broadens from ethical-cosmic guardianship (Varuṇa–Mitra) to prosperity and freedom (Bhaga–Aditi), then turns to active protection against disruptive forces and slander/obstruction.

  3. Climax

A forceful protective turn: hostile and deceptive energies are called out and countered through divine power (notably Marut force in the cited verse).

  4. Where it settles

The hymn resolves in renewal and guidance through the Aśvins, ending with a comprehensive request for wealth, strength, and “deathless” prosperities.

The deity: Ādityas with allied powers

  • In the VedaVaruṇa and Mitra appear as guardians of ṛta (cosmic-moral order), overseeing truth, oaths, and social harmony; Bhaga apportions fortune and rightful shares; Aditi is the boundless mother-principle of the Ādityas, invoked for freedom from constraint and protection. The hymn also voices martial-protective energy through the Maruts and restorative guidance through the Aśvins, while the “fivefold hotṛ-power” evokes the integrated sacrificial priesthood and/or a divine hearer of the well-formed hymn.
  • Cosmic functionTo uphold ṛta, stabilize relationships and contracts, distribute prosperity, protect the sacrifice from disorder/hostility, and guide the worshipper toward safe paths and enduring well-being.
  • Inner significanceA movement from anxiety to assurance: aligning speech and conduct with truth (Mitra), conscience and law (Varuṇa), rightful enjoyment (Bhaga), and inner wideness/freedom (Aditi), supported by courage against disruptive impulses (Maruts) and renewed vitality and right direction (Aśvins).

The seer

  • Atri (Ātreya)Ātreya gotra (Atri lineage) · One of the great Vedic seers and a principal family-rishi of the Rig Veda’s Fifth Maṇḍala; associated with luminous insight, healing/protection prayers, and Āditya-centered invocations.

Offerings

  • Ghee (ājya) into Agni
  • Soma (where applicable) or soma-substitute libations in later practice
  • Grain/oblations (caru) and water offerings as per family tradition
  • Dakṣiṇā/charity as a Bhaga-aligned completion

Frequently Asked Questions

It is a prayer for peace, protection, and prosperity, centered on the Ādityas (Varuṇa, Mitra, Bhaga, Aditi). The hymn asks for orderly success (ṛta), safety from harmful forces, and well-being for the worshipper and community.

The hymn gathers complementary powers: the Ādityas uphold truth and order, the Maruts provide active protection against disruptive forces, and the Aśvins bring renewal, guidance, and practical help. Together they cover moral order, defense, and flourishing.

It means enduring, life-supporting blessings—health, stable wealth, strength, and good fortune that are not easily lost. In Vedic language, “amṛta” points to what sustains life and aligns one with lasting well-being rather than short-lived gains.
