The hymn opens by addressing the hostile kṛtyā as an entity that can be handled and redirected, establishing the speaker’s authority over it.
Seize the kṛtyā, remove it from the victim, and lead it back—then set it upon the kṛtyā-maker so it strikes him.
Through vivid similes (doe/hind in chase; son to father; slipping bond) the mantra asserts inevitability and speed of return: the kṛtyā cannot remain where it was sent, but must home to its source.
The conclusion seals the reversal by reiterating the destination (kartṛ) and the effect (smite/bite), leaving the patient disentangled and the hostile force re-assigned.
हस्तगृह्य परा णय / समक्षमस्मा आ धेहिकृत्ये कृत्याकृतं पुनःकृत्या कर्तारमृच्छतुAbhicarika (Counter-sorcery / Kṛtyā-pratiṣedha)
To remove an inflicted kṛtyā from the patient and redirect it back to the sorcerer, resulting in the sorcerer’s affliction and the patient’s release.
Atharvanic ritual specialists (bhaiṣajya/atharvan priests) acting for a client who suspects bewitchment, as well as householders seeking formal protective recitation under guidance.
Kṛtyā is hostile, engineered witchcraft—an animated act of maleficence sent against a victim. In this hymn it is addressed as a movable entity that can be caught, turned, and made to strike its own maker.
Not to worship kṛtyā, but to neutralize it by coercion—forcing disengagement from the victim and reattachment to the kṛtyā-maker so the harm rebounds.
Performed upon detection of bewitchment; often suited to liminal times (dawn/dusk) or immediately when symptoms intensify, with the patient present.
None required (mantra + hand-grasp transfer is central)
If using a cord/bundle: hold it during recitation as the notional seat of the kṛtyā; gesture removal from the patient, then cast/discard it away from the dwelling (or toward the adversary’s direction) to enact return.
Kṛtyā is personified, deliberately made sorcery—harm ‘constructed’ and sent by someone. The hymn treats it like a force that can be caught, redirected, and made to return to its sender.
It mainly commands the hostile agency itself. The speaker uses Atharvanic authority to order the kṛtyā to leave the victim and go back to the kṛtyā-maker, where it is to strike.
Not necessarily. The verses emphasize grasping and transferring the kṛtyā through ritual speech and gesture; a simple cord/knot or held bundle can be used as a symbolic ‘carrier,’ but the mantra is primary.
