Mantra 1

Mantra 2

Mantra 3

Mantra 4

Mantra 5

Mantra 6

Mantra 7

Mantra 8

Mantra 9

Mantra 10

Mantra 11

Mantra 12

Mantra 13

Inside Sukta 163

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

The hymn opens by marveling at the Aśva’s primordial birth-cry and emergence from oceanic depth or rich earth, establishing the steed as a cosmic wonder.

  2. Development

Imagery expands to the Aśva’s supreme form and striving movement toward the ‘step of Go,’ contrasting right pursuit of nourishment/light with the mortal’s tendency to chase pleasure and fall to lower sustenance.

  3. Climax

The vision of the Aśva approaching the highest station—goal of attainment—moving toward the cosmic Father and Mother polarity as the summit of integration.

  4. Where it settles

The steed becomes ‘most welcome’ to the gods and, as a perfected force, apportions desirable riches to the giver, ending in beneficence and fulfillment.

The deity: Aśva

  • In the VedaDescribed as a marvellous being whose first cry arises at birth from the ocean-depth or from rich earth-matter, bearing eagle-like wings and deer-like arms—an image of swift, far-ranging power worthy of invocation (upastutya).
  • Cosmic functionEmbodies the dynamic force of ascent and conveyance: the carrier that moves between depths and heights, linking earth, oceanic origin, and the supreme station, and enabling victorious attainment of the ‘pada of Go’ (radiance/nourishment).
  • Inner significanceSymbol of prāṇa/impulse toward illumination: disciplined energy that, when rightly followed, leads to higher truth and fullness; when followed through mere craving, it sinks into lower satisfactions and ‘feeds on herbs’—the mind’s descent into coarse supports.

The seer

  • Dīrghatamas ĀucathyaĀucathya (of Ucathya’s line; associated with the Aṅgirasa-Bhāradvāja stream in later tradition) · A visionary-poet famed for profound, symbolic hymns that interpret cosmic processes through riddles and luminous imagery (notably the ‘riddle hymns’ of Mandala 1).

  • Recite RV 1.163 in Triṣṭubh cadence with attention to imagery of birth-from-depth and ascent
  • Offer oblations while contemplating the ‘pada of Go’ as the goal (light, order, nourishment)
  • Conclude with a short śānti/prārthanā for steadiness of prāṇa and lawful prosperity

Offerings

  • Ghṛta (ghee) into Agni
  • Soma-substitute in later practice (e.g., milk/clarified butter libation as symbolic rasa)
  • Kuśa, water, and fragrant offerings (optional, per gṛhya/śrauta adaptation)

Frequently Asked Questions

No. It praises the horse, but also uses the Aśva as a symbol of a divine, rising life-force that carries one from lower states toward light, order, and the highest attainment.

Literally it is the “step/place of Go (cow).” In Vedic symbolism, Go often points to light or the ray and its nourishment, so the phrase suggests reaching the station of radiance and true sustenance.

Direct your energy toward truth and higher nourishment rather than chasing mere pleasure. When the life-force is guided rightly, it becomes victorious and brings fullness; when misdirected, it sinks to lower satisfactions.
