Rishi

Unknown/uncertain for RV 10.31.1 from provided data alone.

Devata

Viśve Devāḥ (All Gods) / collective divine powers.

Chandas

Inside Sukta 31

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

A direct appeal that the hymn of praise reach the Gods for help, asking for companionship with the swift divine powers and safe crossing beyond hardship (10.31.1).

  2. Development

The prayer expands into a contemplative vision: right-mindedness spreads; the ancient Cow appears in vastness; beings act together from a single source (“womb of the Asura”), bearing one work in harmony (10.31.6).

  3. Climax

The hymn crystallizes its doctrine of increase through ṛta: the shining fills the udder even for the dark; truth-order is preserved and not diminished (10.31.11).

  4. Where it settles

It settles into assurance that alignment with the collective gods and ṛta yields protection, increase, and passage beyond adversity—friendship with the divine as the practical outcome of praise.

The deity: Viśve Devāḥ / collective divine powers

  • In the VedaThe Viśve Devāḥ are invoked as a unified host of deities—swift, many-formed helpers—who can be approached through śaṃsa (praise/affirmation) and yajña (worship). In this sukta they also appear through symbolic functions: the Cow (gauḥ) as primordial vastness and the sustaining principle of ṛta as the divine order that cannot be diminished.
  • Cosmic functionTo coordinate and uphold the world-order (ṛta), distribute boons, protect the sacrificer, and harmonize diverse divine forces into a single effective aid.
  • Inner significanceThe integrated powers of consciousness: clarity, right-mindedness (sumati), and the capacity to cross inner hardship; the movement from darkness (kṛṣṇa) toward the shining (ruśat) through alignment with truth-order.

The seer

  • Kavaṣa Ailūṣa (traditional attribution)Ailūṣa; intertextual linkage to the Kaṇva seer-family is suggested within the hymn · A late-Rigvedic seer associated in tradition with powerful, sometimes contested inspiration and with hymns that blend ritual prayer with cosmological and symbolic language.
